Selma completed the 2022 season with a 7-4 record. With their 4-1 region record and a second place finish in Class 5A region three, the Saints earned a spot in the playoffs in 2022. Selma's season came to an end in the first round of the playoffs when they fell to Tallassee by a score of 49-16. Since 2010, Selma has gone a combined 64-73. Their 46.7% winning percentage ranks 25th in Class 5A over the past thirteen seasons. Over the past 25 seasons, Selma has managed to compile a record of 107-144. Their 43.0% winning percentage ranks 35th in Class 5A and 259th in the AHSAA. The Saints will be under the direction of new head football coach Leon Day as they enter the 2023 season. Coach Day has been a physical education teacher at Clark Elementary and teacher/coach for 24 years. The Saints could have one of their best teams in many years in 2023. Look for them to be very competitive this season. The Saints should be in contention for a playoff spot in region three this season. Hosting a first round playoff game on their home turf would be an advantage. Quarterback Marcus Walton rushed for 883 yards and 13 TDs as a sophomore last season. Kristian Moore had 100 tackles including 15 for losses as a freshman in 2022, and return specialist Marquarius Reese averaged 22.8 yards per punt return last season with one TD. The Saints open the 2023 season at home against non-region opponent Beauregard on Thursday, August 24 at Memorial Stadium. Last year the Beauregard Hornets finished with an overall record of 10-2 and in second place in Class 5A region four. The Hornets lost in the second round of the Class 5A playoffs to UMS-Wright by a score of 48-30. Selma and Beauregard have met a total of 2 times on the football field. The Saints have a 0-2-0 record against the Hornets. They last met in 2022 with Beauregard winning by a score of 21-16. Selma lost 5A All-State defensive back DaKaari Nelson to graduation.
