 2023 Preview

Piedmont completed the 2022 season with a 12-3 record. Last year Piedmont captured the region six title and a number one seed in the Class 3A playoffs. They finished region play with a 7-0 record. The Bulldogs won four consecutive playoff games to reach the Class 3A State Championship game only to fall just short of claiming a title. They were defeated by St. James at the Alabama Super Seven 45-28 in Auburn.

Over the past two seasons the Bulldogs have Finished 25-5 and will be looking to continue that winning tradition. As one of the best football programs in the state since 2010, Piedmont has gone a combined 158-24. Their 86.8% winning percentage ranks 1st in Class 3A over the past thirteen seasons.

Over the past 25 seasons, Piedmont has finished a combined 226-89. Their 72.0% winning percentage ranks 2nd in Class 3A and 29th in the AHSAA. Their last losing season was 2004.

The Bulldogs will be under the direction of new head football coach Jonathan Miller as they enter the 2023 season.  Coach Miller will take over from future Hall of Fame coach Steve Smith. With huge shoes to fill the Bulldogs made a great choice for the head coaching job. The future remains bright for Piedmont on the gridiron. His 100 wins rank 59th among active coaches in the AHSAA. Over the course of his career, Coach Miller's teams have qualified for the playoffs a total of ten times and won three region championships.

The Bulldogs lost a ton of talent to graduation. Hopefully Coach Miller can fill the shoes of Steve Smith and the holes on the depth chart. We think he will be just fine at Piedmont.

The Bulldogs enter the 2023 season riding a 5 game regular season winning streak.

While most teams rebuild during the off season, Piedmont has been a consistent winner the past few years and will simply reload this season. The Bulldogs enter the season with expectations of not only a region crown but will be contending for a trip to the state championship game. They are considered one the favorites in region six and could very well be representing the North in the Class 3A title game. The Bulldogs have succeeded in reaching the playoffs every year since 2005 and this year should be no exception.

Jack Hayes will not lead the Bulldogs onto the football field in 2023 from the quarterback position. His numbers over the past few years were among the best of all-time in Alabama. If Coach Miller can find a replacement, the Bulldogs should be contenders.

Junior WR Ishmael Bethel returns after catching 62 passes for 1,042 yards and 17 TDs. Rollie Pinto returns with a total of 2,077 receiving yards and 14 touchdowns.

DB Trevor Pike will be the leader of the defense as the season opens. Chance Murphy will also be counted on to be a team leader from his defensive end position.

The Bulldogs open the 2023 season at home against non-region opponent Cherokee County on Friday, September 1 at Field of Champions. Last year the Cherokee County Warriors finished with an overall record of 12-3 and in first place in Class 4A region six. The Warriors lost in the Class 4A State Championship game last season when they were defeated by Andalusia. They final score was 28-7 in the Super Seven finals in Auburn.

Piedmont and Cherokee County have met a total of 80 times on the football field. The Bulldogs have a 38-39-3 record against the Warriors. They last met in 2022 with Cherokee County winning by a score of 21-14.

The Bulldogs lost a ton of talent to graduation off the 2022 squad. Replacing these players will be a key to another successful season. Piedmont lost 3A All-State  quarterback Jack Hayes to graduation. He was named to the first team last season. Also graduating were teammates offensive lineman ChrisJon Gurley, linebacker Brody Epps, kicker Sloan Smith, defensive back Cody Holloway, athlete Max Hanson and linebacker Rhett Alford.

The Bulldogs return 3A All-State Senior defensive lineman Chance Murphy. He was named to the first team last season. The Bulldogs also return Junior receiver Ishmael Bethel. He was named to the second team.
