 2023 Preview 


       Oneonta completed the 2022 season with a 11-2 record. With their 5-1 region record and a third place finish in Class 4A region six, the Redskins earned a spot in the playoffs in 2022. Oneonta made a nice playoff run in 2022, reaching the semi-finals before falling to a very good Cherokee County team by the score of 42-21.

       Over the past two seasons the Redskins have Finished 24-4 and will be looking to continue that winning tradition. Since 2010, Oneonta has gone a combined 117-49. Their 70.5% winning percentage ranks 6th in Class 4A over the past thirteen seasons.

       Over the past 25 seasons, Oneonta has finished a combined 212-97. Their 69.0% winning percentage ranks 5th in Class 4A and 41st in the AHSAA.




       The Redskins are led by head coach Phil Phillips who is entering his sixth season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 49-17 over the past five seasons at Oneonta. Under his direction the Redskins have qualified for the playoffs a total of five times. They have won one region crown with Coach Phillips.

       The Redskins had a couple of players transfer during the off season so Coach Phillips will need to find replacements and depth at a few skilled positions.

       The Redskins are considered one of the favorites for the region six championship this season and a home game in the first round of the playoffs. Don't be surprised if the Redskins are making another deep run into the playoffs.

      RB DaMarion Bothwell rushed for 3,112 yards and 41 TDs on 256 attempts last season. He will be returning in 2023.

       The Redskins open the 2023 season at home against non-region opponent Cleveland on Friday, August 25 at Gilbreath Stadium. Last year the Cleveland Panthers finished with an overall record of 7-4 and in second place in Class 2A region six. The Panthers lost in the first round of the Class 2A playoffs to Winston County by a score of 50-14.

       Oneonta and Cleveland have met a total of 45 times on the football field. The Redskins have a 35-6-4 record against the Panthers. They last met in 2022 with Oneonta winning by a score of 47-14.

       Oneonta lost 4A All-State  defensive lineman Jacob Handley to graduation. He was named to the second team last season.

       The Redskins return 4A All-State Senior running back Fluff Bothwell. He was named to the first team last season.
