 2023 Preview 


       Ider finished the 2022 season with a disappointing 2-8 record. Last year Ider finished eighth in Class 2A region seven with a 0-7 region record and failed to qualify for the playoffs.

       The Hornets hope to rebound after a down year. Last season they struggled winning just two games which followed a 7-4 record in 2021.

       Ider was inconsistent offensively last year and they need some improvement if the Hornets want to be competitive. They only averaged 16.3 points a game.

       Since 2010, Ider has gone a combined 57-78. Their 42.2% winning percentage ranks 41st in Class 2A over the past thirteen seasons.

       Over the past 25 seasons, Ider has managed to compile a record of 103-156. Their 40.0% winning percentage ranks 44th in Class 2A and 291st in the AHSAA.




       The Hornets are led by head coach Chad Grant who is entering his third season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 9-12 over the past two seasons at Ider. Under his direction the Hornets have qualified for the playoffs once. They have not won a region crown with Coach Grant.

       Coach Grant has set the tone for this season. Defense will be the focus in fall practice as the Hornets work hard to get better at stopping the run in 2023. The Hornets will start the season without a lot of depth but Coach Grant feels good about the players and depth he has. The Hornets have one of the toughest overall schedules in Class 2A. Their opponents had a combined record of 59-44 last season. That ranks 7th in Class 2A and 54th in the AHSAA.

       The Hornets enter the 2023 season in the middle of a 8 game losing streak. They would like nothing better than to end the string of losses early in the season.

       The Hornets will need to win a few more games this fall if they hope to grab one of the four playoff slots in region seven this season. After just 2 wins last year, Ider will be hoping to become more competitive in the region.

       The Hornets open the 2023 season on the road against non-region opponent Asbury on Friday, September 1. Last year the Asbury Rams finished with an overall record of 1-9 and in seventh place in Class 3A region seven. The Rams ended last season on a positive note with a win over Woodville by a score of 36-32 after failing to gain a playoff spot.

       Ider and Asbury have met a total of 6 times on the football field. The Hornets have a 6-0-0 record against the Rams. They last met in 2022 with Ider winning by a score of 28-0.

       Ider lost 2A All-State  linebacker Benjamin Smith to graduation. He was named to the second team last season.

Thomasville scored 54 points against Gulf Shores in the first quarter of a game in 2003. They managed to hang on for an 81-14 win.
