 2023 Preview

Fruitdale finished the 2022 season with a disappointing 2-8 record. Last year Fruitdale finished sixth in Class 1A region one with a 1-5 region record and failed to qualify for the playoffs.

Fruitdale was inconsistent offensively last year and they need some improvement if the Pirates want to be competitive. They only averaged 18.8 points a game.

Since 2010, the Fruitdale football program has struggled with a record of 43-92.

Over the past 25 seasons, Fruitdale has not won much with a record of 81-176. Their 32.0% winning percentage ranks 52nd in Class 1A and 343rd in the AHSAA.

The Pirates are led by head coach John Hobbs who is entering his second season at the helm. His team finished with a 2-8 record in his first season at Fruitdale. The Pirates have yet to reach the playoffs under his direction. They have not won a region crown with Coach Hobbs.

The Pirates will need to win a few more games this fall if they hope to grab one of the four playoff slots in region one this season. After just 2 wins last year, Fruitdale will be hoping to become more competitive in the region.

The Pirates open the 2023 season at home against non-region opponent St. Lukes on Friday, August 25 at Indians Stadium. Last year the St. Lukes Wildcats finished with an overall record of 4-7 and in third place in Class 2A region one. The Wildcats lost in the first round of the Class 2A playoffs to G.W. Long by a score of 19-16.

Fruitdale and St. Lukes have met a total of 9 times on the football field. The Pirates have a 2-7-0 record against the Wildcats. They last met in 2021 with St. Lukes winning by a score of 35-8.

Fruitdale lost 1A All-State  linebacker Sherwin Dean to graduation. He was named to the second team last season.
