 2023 Preview

Fayetteville finished the 2022 season with a disappointing 3-7 record. Last year Fayetteville finished sixth in Class 2A region four with a 2-5 region record and failed to qualify for the playoffs.

Fayetteville was inconsistent offensively last year and they need some improvement if the Wolves want to be competitive. They only averaged 18.3 points a game.

Fayetteville struggled on the defensive side of the football last year. The defense found little success in stopping opposing offenses as they gave up an average of 36.0 points a game.

Since 2010, Fayetteville has gone a combined 47-86. Their 35.3% winning percentage ranks 46th in Class 2A over the past thirteen seasons.

Over the past 25 seasons, Fayetteville has not won much with a record of 75-177. Their 30.0% winning percentage ranks 53rd in Class 2A and 351st in the AHSAA.

The Wolves are led by head coach John Limbaugh who is entering his twelveth season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 43-70 over the past eleven seasons at Fayetteville. Under his direction the Wolves have qualified for the playoffs a total of two times. They have won one region crown with Coach Limbaugh.

The Wolves will need to win a few more games this fall if they hope to grab one of the four playoff slots in region four this season.

The Wolves open the 2023 season at home against non-region opponent Verbena on Friday, September 1 at FarmLinks Field. Last year the Verbena Red Devils finished with an overall record of 8-3 and in third place in Class 1A region four. The Red Devils lost in the first round of the Class 1A playoffs to Sweet Water by a score of 48-8.

Fayetteville and Verbena have met a total of 14 times on the football field. The Wolves have a 7-7-0 record against the Red Devils. They last met in 2022 with Verbena winning by a score of 50-18.
