 2023 Preview 


       Excel completed the 2022 season with a 9-2 record. Last year Excel captured the region one title and a number one seed in the Class 3A playoffs. They finished region play with a 7-0 record. It was the first region championship for the Panthers since the 1997 season. Excel's season came to an end in the first round of the playoffs when they fell to Pike County by a score of 42-14.

       The Panthers won as many games as in any season since 1997. It marked the first time since the 2009 season that the Panthers qualified for the playoffs. The Panthers last playoff victory came during the 1998 season. They would love to break through this year with a post season win.

       Since 2010, Excel has gone a combined 48-82. Their 36.9% winning percentage ranks 45th in Class 3A over the past thirteen seasons.

       Over the past 25 seasons, Excel has managed to compile a record of 115-144. Their 44.0% winning percentage ranks 40th in Class 3A and 246th in the AHSAA.




       The Panthers are led by head coach Jason Phillips who is entering his third season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 15-6 over the past two seasons at Excel. Under his direction the Panthers have qualified for the playoffs once. They have won one region crown with Coach Phillips.

       The Panthers enjoyed a great season in 2022 winning nine games. It is the most by the program since 1997.

       The Panthers enter the 2023 season having won 7 straight region games.

       The Panthers should be in contention for a playoff spot in region one this season. Hosting a first round playoff game on their home turf would be an advantage.

       The Panthers open the 2023 season on the road against non-region opponent B.C. Rain on Friday, August 25 at Trimmier Park. Last year the B.C. Rain Red Raiders finished with an overall record of 4-6 and in sixth place in Class 5A region one. The Red Raiders closed out the regular season with a loss to Gulf Shores by a score of 56-27.

       Excel and B.C. Rain have met a total of 2 times on the football field. The Panthers have a 1-1-0 record against the Red Raiders. They last met in 2022 with Excel winning by a score of 22-18.

       Excel lost 3A All-State  offensive lineman Cade Barnett to graduation. He was named to the second team last season. Also graduating was teammate running back Kolby Peavy.
