 2023 Preview

Columbia finished the 2022 season with a disappointing 0-9 record. Last year Columbia finished sixth in Class 6A region seven with a 0-5 region record and failed to qualify for the playoffs.

The Eagles have never qualified for a playoff spot and would love to break that streak this season. The Eagles have never won a playoff game in the school's history. They would like to break through and pick up that first post season victory in 2023.

The offense struggled putting points on the score board as Columbia averaged scoring just 4.4 points a game. The Eagles also struggled on the defensive side of the football as they found little success in stopping opposing offenses and allowed an average of 55.6 points a game.

The Eagles would prefer to forget the past two seasons as they have finished with a 0-19 record. Since 2010, the Columbia football program has struggled with a record of 16-113.

Over the past 17 seasons, Columbia has not won much with a record of 31-138. Their 18.0% winning percentage ranks 57th in Class 6A and 391st in the AHSAA. The Eagles have struggled on the football field with only two winning seasons during this time. Their last winning season was 2010.

The Eagles will be under the direction of new head football coach Sean Watson as they enter the 2023 season.

What will it take for Columbia to build a football program that can compete? First they just need to find a way to win one game. The Eagles have one of the toughest overall schedules in Class 6A. Their opponents had a combined record of 69-40 last season. That ranks 1st in Class 6A and 4th in the AHSAA.

The Eagles enter the 2023 season in the middle of a 71 game losing streak. They would like nothing better than to end the string of losses early in the season.

This season, the Eagles will be a long shot for one of the four playoff spots in region seven. After not winning a single game last year, the goal at Columbia will be to simply win some games.

The Eagles open the 2023 season on the road against non-region opponent Fairview on Thursday, August 24 at Dafford Smith Stadium. Last year the Fairview Aggies finished with an overall record of 7-4 and in second place in Class 5A region eight. The Aggies lost in the first round of the Class 5A playoffs to Guntersville by a score of 24-13.

Columbia and Fairview have met a total of 4 times on the football field. The Eagles have a 0-4-0 record against the Aggies. They last met in 2022 with Fairview winning by a score of 51-0.
