 2023 Preview

Clay-Chalkville completed the 2022 season with a 8-2 record. Last year Clay-Chalkville captured the region six title and a number one seed in the Class 6A playoffs. They finished region play with a 6-0 record. Clay-Chalkville's season came to an end in the first round of the playoffs when they fell to Parker by a score of 7-6.

The Cougars hope to get back closer to the 15-0 record in 2021.

The defense was very stingy last season as Clay-Chalkville ranked 3rd in the AHSAA. The defense allowed only 8.3 points a game.

Over the past two seasons the Cougars have Finished 23-2 and will be looking to continue that winning tradition. As one of the best football programs in the state since 2010, Clay-Chalkville has gone a combined 134-35. Their 79.3% winning percentage ranks 4th in Class 6A over the past thirteen seasons.

Over the past 25 seasons, Clay-Chalkville has finished a combined 228-82. Their 74.0% winning percentage ranks 4th in Class 6A and 21st in the AHSAA. The Cougars have been successful on the football field with twenty-two winning seasons during this time.

The Cougars are led by head coach Drew Gilmer who is entering his seventh season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 67-12 over the past six seasons at Clay-Chalkville. Under his direction the Cougars have qualified for the playoffs a total of six times. They have won two region crowns with Coach Gilmer. Coach Gilmer led to a state championship in 2021.

An unexpected early exit from the playoffs last year will only fuel the fires for the Cougars to prepare to get back on track for a championship run in 2023.

The Cougars enter the 2023 season having won 12 straight region games.

While most teams rebuild during the off season, Clay-Chalkville has been a consistent winner the past few years and will simply reload this season. The Cougars are considered one of the favorites for the region six championship this season and a home game in the first round of the playoffs. The Cougars have successfully qualified for the playoffs every year since 2011 and expect to be included again when November rolls around.

QB Kamari McClellan will be returning after completing 77 of 135 passes for 1,334 yards last season along with 15 touchdowns. But 5 star athlete Jaylen Mbakwe is said to be starting at QB for the Cougars this fall.

Receiver Mario Craver will return after grabbing 32 passes good for 525 yards and 9 TDs as a junior last season.

OT JacQawn McRoy will be anchoring the offensive line once again. LB DAngelo Barber and CB Tevis Metcalf will be back on defense.

The Cougars open the 2023 season on the road against non-region opponent Briarwood on Friday, August 25 at Lions Pride Stadium. Last year the Briarwood Lions finished with an overall record of 3-7 and in sixth place in Class 6A region three. The Lions closed out the regular season with a loss to Fairhope by a score of 44-22.

Clay-Chalkville and Briarwood have met a total of 3 times on the football field. The Cougars have a 3-0-0 record against the Lions. They last met in 2022 with Clay-Chalkville winning by a score of 48-0.
