 2023 Preview

Calhoun finished the 2022 season with a disappointing 1-9 record. Last year Calhoun finished eighth in Class 1A region four with a 0-7 region record and failed to qualify for the playoffs.

The Tigers have not qualified for the playoffs since the 1999 season and would love to end that streak this year. The Tigers last playoff victory came during the 1999 season. They would love to break through this year with a post season win.

The offense struggled putting points on the score board as Calhoun averaged scoring just 6.4 points a game. The Tigers also struggled on the defensive side of the football as they found little success in stopping opposing offenses and allowed an average of 42.3 points a game.

The Tigers would prefer to forget the past two seasons as they have finished with a 1-19 record. Since 2010, the Calhoun football program has struggled with a record of 12-117.

Over the past 25 seasons, Calhoun has not won much with a record of 35-217. Their 14.0% winning percentage ranks 62nd in Class 1A and 393rd in the AHSAA. The Tigers have struggled on the football field with only two winning seasons during this time. Their last winning season was 1999.

The Tigers are led by head coach Ervin Starr who is entering his seventh season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 2-57 over the past six seasons at Calhoun. The Tigers have yet to reach the playoffs under his direction. They have not won a region crown with Coach Starr.

The Tigers enter the 2023 season in the middle of a 9 game losing streak. They would like nothing better than to end the string of losses early in the season.

This season, the Tigers will be a long shot for one of the four playoff spots in region four.

The Tigers open the 2023 season at home against non-region opponent Barbour County on Friday, September 1 at Samuel Bruce Stadium. Last year the Barbour County Jaguars finished with an overall record of 0-10 and in eighth place in Class 2A region three.

Calhoun and Barbour County have met a total of 4 times on the football field. The Tigers have a 1-3-0 record against the Jaguars. They last met in 2022 with Calhoun winning by a score of 26-8.
