 2023 Preview

Auburn completed the 2022 season with a 12-2 record. With their 7-1 region record and a second place finish in Class 7A region two, the Tigers earned a spot in the playoffs in 2022. The Tigers won three consecutive playoff games to reach the Class 7A State Championship game in 2022 only to fall just short of claiming a title. They were defeated by Thompson at the Alabama Super Seven 49-24 in Auburn.

Over the past two seasons the Tigers have Finished 22-5 and will be looking to continue that winning tradition. Since 2010, Auburn has gone a combined 122-38. Their 76.3% winning percentage ranks 3rd in Class 7A over the past thirteen seasons.

Over the past 25 seasons, Auburn has finished a combined 207-92. Their 69.0% winning percentage ranks 6th in Class 7A and 43rd in the AHSAA. The Tigers have been successful on the football field with twenty-two winning seasons during this time.

The Tigers are led by head coach Keith Etheredge who is entering his third season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 22-5 over the past two seasons at Auburn. Under his direction the Tigers have qualified for the playoffs a total of two times. They have not won a region crown with Coach Etheredge. His 172 wins rank 22nd among active coaches in the AHSAA. Over the course of his career, Coach Etheredge's teams have qualified for the playoffs a total of seventeen times and won eight region championships. He has a 45-14 record in the playoffs during his career. The playoff victories rank with the best among active coaches. Coach Etheredge won five state championships prior to arriving at Auburn, the last coming in 2019 at Oxford.

The Auburn Tigers have reached the semi-finals of the playoffs the past four seasons with two trips to the title game but have yet to win a state championship. The Tigers have one of the toughest schedules in the state this season. Their non-region opponents finished 24-4 last year. The Tigers have one of the toughest overall schedules in Class 7A. Their opponents had a combined record of 66-49 last season. That ranks 9th in Class 7A and 50th in the AHSAA.

Auburn enters the 2023 season with a string of 9 consecutive wins on their home field at Duck Samford Stadium.

While most teams rebuild during the off season, Auburn has been a consistent winner the past few years and will simply reload this season. The Tigers are considered one of the favorites for the region two championship this season and a home game in the first round of the playoffs. Don't be surprised if the Tigers are making another deep run into the playoffs. The Tigers have successfully qualified for the playoffs every year since 2000 and expect to be included again when November rolls around.

QB Jackson Kilgore will be returning for his Junior season ready to lead the Tigers in 2023.

Ean Nation will be back at receiver and is a very dynamic player to watch this season. Towns McGough will also be back as one of the best kickers in the state.

Tyler Flakes returns after gaining 610 yards rushing and 10 TDs last season.

The Tigers open the 2023 season on the road against non-region opponent Hoover on Friday, August 25 at Regions Park. Last year the Hoover Buccaneers finished with an overall record of 11-2 and in first place in Class 7A region three. The Buccaneers lost in the semi-finals round of the Class 7A playoffs to Thompson by a score of 40-10.

Auburn and Hoover have met a total of 3 times on the football field. The Tigers have a 2-1-0 record against the Buccaneers. They last met in 2022 with Auburn winning by a score of 17-14.

The Tigers lost a ton of talent to graduation off the 2022 squad. Replacing these players will be a key to another successful season. Auburn lost 7A All-State  offensive lineman Brayden Joiner to graduation. He was named to the first team last season. Also graduating were teammates linebacker Klark Cleveland, defensive lineman Mark Toland, linebacker Coleman Granberry and kicker Towns McGough.

The Tigers return 7A All-State Senior receiver Ean Nation. He was named to the first team last season.
