 2022 Preview 


       Leeds completed the 2021 season with a 10-2 record. With their 6-1 region record and a second place finish in Class 5A region six, the Greenwave earned a spot in the playoffs in 2021. Leeds reached the second round of the playoffs before falling to Pleasant Grove by a score of 35-0.

       The Greenwave won as many games as in any season since 2015.

       Since 2010, Leeds has gone a combined 104-49. Their 68.0% winning percentage ranks 6th in Class 5A over the past twelve seasons.

       Over the past 25 seasons, Leeds has managed to compile a record of 190-117. Their 62.0% winning percentage ranks 12th in Class 5A and 82nd in the AHSAA.




       The Greenwave are led by head coach Jerry Hood who is entering his fourth season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 21-13 over the past three seasons at Leeds. Under his direction the Greenwave have qualified for the playoffs a total of two times. They have not won a region crown with Coach Hood.

       Coach Hood's overall record as a head football coach in sixteen season stands at 124-65 (65.6%). His 124 wins rank 45th among active coaches in the AHSAA. Over the course of his career, Coach Hood's teams have qualified for the playoffs a total of ten times and won four region championships. Coach Hood won a state championship at Clay-Chalkville in 2014.

       Senior quarterback Jarod Latta will lead the Greenwave into the 2022 football season. Coach Hood has shown improvement in each of his three seasons and this may be his best squad at Leeds.

       The Leeds Greenwave will play in Class 5A region six during the 2022 season.

       Leeds enters the 2022 season with a string of 6 consecutive wins on their home field at Homer Smiles Field.

       The Greenwave should be in contention for a playoff spot in region six this season. They will be looking to gain an advantage by hosting a first round postseason game.

       The Greenwave open the 2022 season on the road against non-region opponent Mortimer Jordan on Friday, August 19 at Jimmie Trotter Field. Last year the Mortimer Jordan Blue Devils finished with an overall record of 2-8 and in fifth place in Class 6A region six. The Blue Devils closed out the regular season with a loss to Parker by a score of 42-14.

       Leeds and Mortimer Jordan have met a total of 44 times on the football field. The Greenwave have a 35-8-1 record against the Blue Devils. They last met in 1995 with Mortimer Jordan winning by a score of 10-6.

       Leeds returns 5A All-State Junior defensive lineman Kavion Henderson. He was named to the second team last season.

  


Great Moments in Alabama High School Football History

Luverne 'Toad' Wise was the first female football player in Alabama and may have been the first in the country. She was a kicker for the Escambia County Blue Devils in 1939-40.
