 2022 Preview 


       Gordo completed the 2021 season with a 9-3 record. With their 5-1 region record and a second place finish in Class 4A region five, the Green Wave earned a spot in the playoffs in 2021. Gordo reached the second round of the playoffs before falling to Oneonta by a score of 36-26.

       The defense was very stingy last season as Gordo ranked 18th in the AHSAA. The defense allowed only 11.1 points a game.

       Over the past two seasons the Green Wave have gone 22-5 and will be looking to continue that winning tradition. As one of the best football programs in the state since 2010, Gordo has gone a combined 127-27. Their 82.5% winning percentage ranks 2nd in Class 3A over the past twelve seasons.

       Over the past 25 seasons, Gordo has gone a combined 232-77. Their 75.0% winning percentage ranks 1st in Class 3A and 17th in the AHSAA. The Green Wave have been successful on the football field with twenty-five winning seasons during this time. Their last losing season was 1992.




       The Green Wave will be under the direction of new head football coach Gus Smith as they enter the 2022 season.  Coach Smith was an assistant coach on the staff at Jackson last season.

       The Gordo Green Wave will play in Class 3A region five during the 2022 season. The Green Wave may find the schedule slightly easier this season with the move down in classification from Class 4A to 3A. They will compete in region five this year. The Green Wave have one of the toughest schedules in Class 3A. Their opponents had a combined record of 68-45 last season. That ranks 5th in Class 3A and 33rd in the AHSAA.

       Region five will be one of the most competitive regions in any classification this season.

       Gordo enters the 2022 season with a string of 9 consecutive wins on their home field at Green Wave Stadium. While most teams rebuild during the off season, Gordo has been a consistent winner the past few years and will simply reload this season. The Green Wave should be in contention for a playoff spot in region five this season. They will be looking to gain an advantage by hosting a first round postseason game. They have reached the playoffs every year since 2000 and will once again be in the hunt for a spot in 2022.

       The Green Wave open the 2022 season at home against non-region opponent Sipsey Valley on Friday, August 19 at Green Wave Stadium. Last year the Sipsey Valley Bears finished with an overall record of 3-7 and in sixth place in Class 5A region three. The Bears closed out the regular season with a loss to Northside by a score of 45-13.

       Gordo and Sipsey Valley have met a total of 10 times on the football field. The Green Wave have a 10-0-0 record against the Bears. They last met in 2017 with Gordo winning by a score of 49-6.
