 2018 Preview 


       Sulligent completed the 2017 season with a 12-2 record. Last year Sulligent captured the region eight title and a number one seed in the Class 2A playoffs. They finished region play with a 6-0 record. It was the first region championship for the Blue Devils since the 2010 season. Sulligent made a nice playoff run in 2017, reaching the semi-finals before falling to a very good Lanett team by the score of 59-28.

       No team at Sulligent ever won more games in a season than the twelve victories last year. The last time they won as many was back in 2008. The Blue Devils hope to continue the success they had last season. Coach Merchant saw improvement as they won twelve games following a 6-5 record in 2016.

       Since 2010, Sulligent has gone a combined 51-40. Their 56.0% winning percentage ranks 20th in Class 2A over the past eight seasons.

       Over the past 25 seasons, Sulligent has managed to compile a record of 139-134. Their 51.0% winning percentage ranks 22nd in Class 2A and 176th in the AHSAA.




       The Blue Devils are led by head coach Daniel Merchant who is entering his fourth season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 26-11 over the past three seasons at Sulligent. Under his direction the Blue Devils have qualified for the playoffs a total of three times. They have won one region crown with Coach Merchant.

       Coach Merchant's overall record as a head football coach in three season stands at 26-11 (70.3%).

       The Sulligent Blue Devils will play in Class 2A region five during the 2018 season. Following realignment, the Blue Devils remain in 2A but move from region eight over to region five.

       The Blue Devils enter the 2018 season riding a 5 game regular season winning streak. They have won 10 straight games on their home turf at Brown Stadium.

       The Blue Devils should be considered one of the favorites for the region five championship this season and a home game in the first round of the playoffs. Don't be surprised if the Blue Devils are making another deep run into the playoffs.

       The Blue Devils open the 2018 season on the road against non-region opponent Berry Fayette on Friday, August 24 at Fred Webster Stadium. Last year the Berry Fayette Wildcats finished with an overall record of 3-7 and in sixth place in Class 1A region five. The Wildcats ended last season on a positive note with a win over Verbena by a score of 20-12 after failing to gain a playoff spot.

       Sulligent and Berry Fayette have met a total of 19 times on the football field. The Blue Devils have a 14-3-2 record against the Wildcats. They last met in 2007 with Sulligent winning by a score of 29-28.
