 2018 Preview

McGill-Toolen completed the 2017 season with a 13-1 record. The Yellow Jackets cruised through the regular season with a perfect 10-0 record going into the post season. Last year McGill-Toolen captured the region one title and a number one seed in the Class 7A playoffs. They finished region play with a 8-0 record. The Yellow Jackets won three consecutive playoff games to reach the Class 7A State Championship game in 2017 only to fall just short of claiming a title. They were defeated by Hoover at the Alabama Super Seven 48-20 in Auburn.

No team at McGill-Toolen ever won more games in a season than the thirteen victories last year.

The defense was very stingy last season as McGill-Toolen ranked 32nd in the AHSAA. The defense allowed only 13.4 points a game.

Over the past two seasons the Yellow Jackets have gone 26-2 and will be looking to continue that winning tradition. As one of the best football programs in the state since 2010, McGill-Toolen has gone a combined 84-18. Their 82.0% winning percentage ranks 2nd in Class 7A over the past eight seasons.

Over the past 25 seasons, McGill-Toolen has gone a combined 189-94. Their 67.0% winning percentage ranks 6th in Class 7A and 46th in the AHSAA.

The Yellow Jackets are led by head coach Earnest Hill who is entering his second season at the helm. His team finished with a 13-1 record in his first season at McGill-Toolen. Under his direction the Yellow Jackets have qualified for the playoffs once. They have won one region crown with Coach Hill.

Coach Hill's overall record as a head football coach in four season stands at 32-16 (66.7%). Over the course of his career, Coach Hill's teams have qualified for the playoffs a total of three times and won two region championships.

The McGill-Toolen Yellow Jackets will play in Class 7A region one during the 2018 season.

The Yellow Jackets enter the 2018 season riding a 25 game regular season winning streak. McGill-Toolen has won 8 consecutive region games. They have won 20 straight games on their home turf at Lipscomb Park.

While most teams rebuild during the off season, McGill-Toolen has been a consistent winner the past few years and will simply reload this season. The Yellow Jackets enter the season with expectations of not only a region title but reaching the state championship game. They are considered one the favorites in region one and could very well be representing the South in the Class 7A Super Seven come December.

The Yellow Jackets open the 2018 season at home against non-region opponent Spanish Fort on Friday, August 24 at Lipscomb Park. Last year the Spanish Fort Toros finished with an overall record of 11-2 and in first place in Class 6A region one. The Toros lost in the quarter-finals round of the Class 6A playoffs to Wetumpka by a score of 69-41.

McGill-Toolen and Spanish Fort have met a total of 10 times on the football field. The Yellow Jackets have a 6-4-0 record against the Toros. They last met in 2017 with McGill-Toolen winning by a score of 27-20.

McGill-Toolen returns 7A All-State  defensive lineman Darius Cox. He was named to the honorable mention team last season.

College prospects include: LeDarrius Cox (6-3, 300) defensive tackle, Sheldon Layman (6-0, 184) defensive tackle,
