 2016 Preview

Southeastern finished the 2015 season with a disappointing 1-9 record. Last year Southeastern finished seventh in Class 2A region six with a 0-6 region record and failed to qualify for the playoffs.

No team at Southeastern ever lost more games in a season than the nine they lost last year. The defense allowed a team record 469 points last season. The Mustangs have never qualified for a playoff spot and would love to break that streak this season. The Mustangs have never won a playoff game in the school's history. They would like to break through and pick up that first post season victory in 2016.

The offense struggled putting points on the score board as Southeastern averaged scoring just 3.8 points a game. The Mustangs also struggled on the defensive side of the football as they found little success in stopping opposing offenses and allowed an average of 46.9 points a game.

The Mustangs would prefer to forget the past two seasons as they have finished with a 3-17 record.

Southeastern is a relatively new football program having fielded a team only four seasons. They have managed a record of 4-34 over the past four years.

The Mustangs are led by head coach Michael Burkett who is entering his third season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 3-17 over the past two seasons at Southeastern. The Mustangs have yet to reach the playoffs under his direction. They have not won a region crown with Coach Burkett.

Coach Burkett's overall record as a head football coach in two season stands at 3-17 (15.0%).

The Southeastern Mustangs will play in Class 1A region seven during the 2016 season. The Mustangs may find the schedule slightly easier this season with the move down in classification from Class 2A to 1A. They will compete in region seven this year.

The Mustangs enter the 2016 season in the middle of a 8 game losing streak. They would like nothing better than to end the string of losses early in the season.

This season, the Mustangs will be a long shot for one of the four playoff spots in region seven.

The Mustangs open the 2016 season at home against non-region opponent Appalachian on Friday, August 19. Last year the Appalachian Eagles finished with an overall record of 1-9 and in seventh place in Class 1A region five. The Eagles closed out the regular season with a loss to West End Walnut Grove by a score of 48-15.

Southeastern and Appalachian have met a total of 11 times on the football field. The Mustangs have a 5-6-0 record against the Eagles. They last met in 2015 with Appalachian winning by a score of 39-0.
