 2016 Preview 


       Pike Liberal Arts completed the 2015 season with a 4-6 record.

       Since 2010, Pike Liberal Arts has gone a combined 30-34. Their 47.0% winning percentage ranks 8th in Class AAA over the past six seasons.

       Over the past 25 seasons, Pike Liberal Arts has managed to compile a record of 138-127. Their 52.0% winning percentage ranks 9th in Class AAA and 19th in the AISA.

       The Patriots are led by head coach Gene Allen who is entering his fourth season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 14-18 over the past three seasons at Pike Liberal Arts. Under his direction the Patriots have qualified for the playoffs once. They have not won a region crown with Coach Allen.

       Coach Allen's overall record as a head football coach in twenty season stands at 103-114 (47.5%). His 103 wins rank 9th among active coaches in the AISA. Over the course of his career, Coach Allen's teams have qualified for the playoffs a total of ten times and won four region championships. Coach Allen won a state championship at Greenville in 1994.

       The Pike Liberal Arts Patriots will play in Class AAA region two during the 2016 season. Following realignment, the Patriots remain in AAA but move from region one over to region two.

       It will be an uphill battle for the Patriots if they hope to grab one of the four playoff slots in region two this season.

       The Patriots open the 2016 season on the road against non-region opponent Clarke Prep on Friday, August 26 at Billy Hamilton Field. Last year the Clarke Prep Gators finished with an overall record of 8-4 and in second place in Class AA region one. The Gators lost in the semi-finals round of the Class AA playoffs to Edgewood Academy by a score of 49-12.

       Pike Liberal Arts and Clarke Prep have met a total of 4 times on the football field. The Patriots have a 3-1-0 record against the Gators. They last met in 2007 with Clarke Prep winning by a score of 52-20.

       Pike Liberal Arts returns AISA All-State Senior defensive lineman Sawyer McKenzie. He was named to the honorable mention team last season. The Patriots also return Senior linebacker Tyler Hussey. He was named to the second team.

  


Great Moments in Alabama High School Football History

Luverne 'Toad' Wise was the first female football player in Alabama and may have been the first in the country. She was a kicker for the Escambia County Blue Devils in 1939-40.
