 2016 Preview 


       With their 3-3 region record and a fourth place finish in Class 5A region 1, the Lions earned a spot in the playoffs in 2015. Williamson's season came to an end in the first round of the playoffs when they fell to Beauregard by a score of 44-20.

       Since 2010, Williamson has gone a combined 17-44. Their 28.0% winning percentage ranks 46th in Class 5A over the past six seasons.

       Over the past 25 seasons, Williamson has managed to compile a record of 143-129. Their 53.0% winning percentage ranks 27th in Class 5A and 152nd in the AHSAA.

       The Lions are led by head coach Dedrick Sumpter who is entering his fourth season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 10-31 over the past four seasons at Williamson. Under his direction the Lions have qualified for the playoffs once. They have not won a region crown with Coach Sumpter.

       Coach Sumpter's overall record as a head football coach in six seasons stands at 12-47 (20.3%). Over the course of his career, Coach Sumpter's teams have qualified for the playoffs a total of one time .

      

      The Williamson Lions will play in Class 5A region 1 during the 2016 season.

       The Lions have a good chance to earn one of the playoff slots for Region 1 this season.

       The Lions open the 2016 season on the road against non-region opponent LeFlore on Thursday, August 18 at Prichard Stadium. Last year the LeFlore Rattlers finished with an overall record of 3-7 and in sixth place in Class 6A region 1. The closed out the regular season with a loss to Daphne by a score of 27-6.

       Williamson and LeFlore have met a total of 42 times on the football field. The Lions have a 25-17-0 record against the Rattlers. They last met in 2023 with Williamson winning by a score of 22-0.

  








Great Moments in Alabama High School Football History

Morris Higginbotham coached three different teams to divisional state championships in the 1950s. He won titles at Walnut Grove in 1952, West Blocton in 1955 and Enterprise in 1960.
