Prior to 1954 Oneonta High School was known as Blount County High School. Oneonta is in Blount County and in the early 1950s an Oneonta School System was formed. The facilities, the sports name "Redskins" remained the same. I do not know the exact date or circumstances of the change, but I do know that I was in the first graduating class of Oneonta High School in 1954. I think this name change is worthy of note for future reference.

Many schools Went through name changes over the years. Too numerous to name here but I would guess as many as 100 of the teams currently playing were known by another name at some point.

One of the first things I had to learn when I first began researching teams way back then was to figure out who the teams were. So many had changed their name and are known by something else now.

The problem is noting exactly when these changes occurred and why. That has always been a problem. We do try to note the changes on the team's timeline when possible and we know the year the change happened.

I added a note on Oneonta's timeline for 1954 and the name change.
