Talk about crazy, the school board is voting on Tuesday about relieving Addison Head Coach David Smothers of his duties as Head Coach at Addison. There is no claims of wrongdoing, no complaints of "coaching to hard" just he hasn't won enough and some parents don't like him.

The man has a 104-46 record in 13 seasons. He's made the playoffs 12 of his 13 years and folks are mad that he went 6-5 this season. Solution, fire the coach. Doesn't matter that his two-time all-state player and qb didn't play a down this year due to an injury suffered during last year's basketball season.

Some things just don't make sense. Who would want this job when a Addison graduate posts a 69% winning percentage and consistently makes the playoffs gets canned because he doesn't have an outgoing personality.

Sorry to go off on a tangent, but this is crazy. Before you ask, no I am not related to him, no I am not friends with him, I just cover the team for the local paper.

Any thoughts?

I haven't heard other than he would possibly be elementary P.E. at Addison. Haven't heard if he plans to coach anywhere else.

Yeah that was a good group. Had some discipline and technique. I am not sure what has been the change of the last few years. Hope to see it get back.

We have some good athletes coming back and did not lose a ton of seniors at Addison. I think the hope here is that we get back to the Addison of old that has kind of been questionable the last 5 years on physicality and technique that we had been known for over the years. I think for some it was the little things that we haven't done that we used to do, gang tackling, jogging on and off field, lack of physicality, and getting after it at practice or that practice is harder than the game. Hoping that the new staff pushes those things. I think if you do the little things right, winning takes care of itself.

I know they lost their good qb and rb and i believe some linemen. WCHS guru should be able to answer their question pretty good. I think they will be not quite as good as last year just due to the really good players they lost.

I feel we still have a pretty good team. WC lost some really good players last season no doubt. We still have good athletes and returning players that were all region last year. Coaching staff always does a great job.

Aiden Benson will be a beast DL/OL for Meek.
Hastings is a solid hire by Addison.

That Benson kid from Meek is a freak of nature. Big, strong and very surprisingly fast. He will dominate especially in 1A.

Hard to say with a new coach and all. I think with their schedule, minimum 6 wins. Hackleburg lost like their entire team to graduation, Meek lost alot of lineman but has good skill guys back. Decatur Heritage will be loaded, Good Hope should be good as well though I think they take a step back. Right now I say 8-2 best case and off to the playoffs. Worst case 6-4 still going to the playoffs. Meek is my early pick to win the region with Addison second this year. Addison does get them at home so who knows.

How is Double Springs supposed to be this year? I figure they lost a lot from last years team.

Spoke with several players and they seemed to like the first impression. Got a workout schedule and it seems to be player friendly. Guess we won't know anything until week 0, when Addison travels to Lynn to play Coach Hastings old team in the jamboree. This will have the atmosphere of a playoff game. ha

I bet if he wins that will make the transition much smoother.

I dont know how this will go over in the community, last time Addison did not hire someone that played there, he was gone after one year
WinstonCountyGrad Posted - 04/29/2025 : 07:51:06
Looks like he was formally approved yesterday.

Don't know haven't met him. Only thing I can think of is he doesn't have enough time in the Bama system to retire yet. I will ask him when I meet him. He already has been on campus and has spoken with several players and already hired a defensive coordinator. That coach is from Cordova and I have been told his name but honestly don't remember it. Will learn more when he is officially approved for the job, just a formality though.

Not official but I hear from sources that pending School Board approval Addison has hired Mark Hastings, last year's Lynn Head Coach. Mr. Hastings left Lynn and took a head coaching position in Tennessee for this year. If approved, I am sure he will be, he will be Addison's 18th head coach in their storied history. Welcome aboard Mr. Hastings and I wish you the best.
