Posted - 01/22/2026 : 15:20:15 I understand what you are saying with Thompson and Clay, however, to understand what Rellimdo is saying, I think you need to look at 5A down. St. Pauls has routinely been dominant in 5A, move them up to 6A and they struggle to make the playoffs. It's possible that, if the current model continues, that we one day see a private school make some noise above 5A. As of now, some of the issues I see goes deeper than just public vs private. Metro vs rural seems to be a contributing factor as well. Every successful private school that I am aware of is centered in a metro area which allows them to pull kids from the larger schools. To say public schools do not recruit would be naive on my part, however, when you look at schools like Clay Central that is 5A because they are the only school in the county, realistically Clay County doesn't offer much for the entire family to move (jobs, housing) meaning recruiting is almost non-existent for these type schools like some of the private or public schools like a Catholic Montgomery (private) or a Moody (public) that are located in or around large cities. Drop down to lower classifications and the divide is evident. If you are competing in 2A, you don't need to recruit 22 1st teamers from a 7A school, you just need 3 or 4 to make a huge difference against a school that is located in a county with a small population. I certainly don't have a good answer to the problems, but enforcing the rules already in place would be a step in the right direction which should apply for all schools, private and public. quote: Originally posted by Patriots70

The media only mentions private schools vs city schools. What about the county systems?
The debate is private vs public, not private vs city. However, I think city school systems are brought up specifically because there is a perceived advantage to say one high school in one city vs 10 in a county in terms of funding, zoning, etc.
But I feel like that varies by city and varies by county. And I think results on the field/court/whatever show there isn't necessarily an advantage one way or the other. Thompson and Clay both dominated and one is a city school system with one high school and one is a county school sharing resources with 12 other schools.

Posted - 01/22/2026 : 10:55:39 There are a lot of rumors and guesses floating around about reclassification. I would remind everyone that this is a completely different administration than past years. They are also facing obstacles that have never been presented before. I would not be surprised if reclassification gets pushed again today or tomorrow. Hopefully not, but it's a real possibility.

To takes. 1) They are waiting to see if they get some of what they want when reclassification is released. 2) His fellow legislatures are hearing it from their voters and he has been told to back off.
The legislators also are aware that the higher courts do not think highly of their overreach. If they attempt to sneak this bill in under Governor Memaw, it will either die on the courtroom floor or get held up long enough for Tubbs to take office and VETO it.

Posted - 01/22/2026 : 08:49:29 Is the reclassification announcement going to be streaming on the AHSAA network tomorrow? If so, when does it start? Id like to see if I can catch some of the big reveal, assuming we don't have 2 hours of waiting like we did last time. |

I can see the author's point of view, but he neglected to mention several other factors that give private schools distinct advantages. First, Private schools absolutely recruit high caliper athletes at an astronomical rate. Yes, some public schools (Mainly city schools) recruit but our still restricted by zoning. Private schools have found multiple loopholes to counter the "Financial Aid" rules.
Second, private schools can absolutely control their enrollment numbers. If you remove the multiplier and competitive balance you would see 90% them in 1A and 2A. They would purposely mask their numbers so they could attempt to dominate the smaller schools. Because let's face it that's what this boils down to, they don't want to face the tougher competition.
Third, political influence. Make no mistake, the politicians that are medaling into (and for the most part causing) the current situation have a personal agenda. I would guess that the overwhelming majority of their children attend private schools and the want nothing more than to give themselves even more of an advantage.
The AHSAA loses very little by the private schools leaving. If they want their own special rules, then let them go play in their own playground.

From the AHSAA rulebook. Rule IV Section 7: "Any student who transfers to a member school and receives any financial aid shall remain ineligible at that school for one year"
Also do you really believe that private schools are turning away students who are not athletes in order to limit their enrollment?

The Alabama High School Athletic Association is considering a proposal to separate public and private schools.
Under the potential model, independent schools would compete in their own league for postseason play.
The discussion follows growing tensions and formal concerns raised by private schools over policies they view as disproportionate.
A final decision on the reclassification structure could come at a rescheduled AHSAA meeting on January 23.
Let them go! Private schools claim that they do not have an advantage but truly they do. They can absolutely control their enrollment numbers and offer financial aid to athletes. The Choose Act only gives them more opportunities to offer financial aid to more student athletes than before.

Regardless if they are or not, they still have that option.
