Week Seven Tidbits & Records

Can you believe it is already week seven of the regular season. The chase for a region championship is in full swing. Here are a few tidbits from this week's football action.

   *   Be sure to catch our podcast this Sunday night as we will be posting a new episode. Also follow the Barber Shop Gurus on Wednesday morning for their latest game analysis and predictions. Last week the guys went 11-1. Another great week for them.

   *   Monday we will unveil the AHSFHS Power Ratings for every team along with our Top Ten in each classification. Scoring averages are posted now.

   *   Vigor had to forfeit their win over UMS-Wright and Pell City moves to 0-6 after they forfeited their lone victory this season. Let us hope this is the last of these for this season.

   *   Saturday morning Mortimer Jordan defeated Minor 47-7. That game was postponed due to issues with the stadium lights. Later Saturday Sidney Lanier defeated Russell County by a score of 32-28 to wind up the football action this week.

   *   What a week of football. As always we saw upsets, blowouts, offense and some great finishes to games.

   *   We begin each week with the offenses and high scoring games and we had a few this week. EIghteen teams put up 60 or more points on their opponents led by two unlikely schools this week as Midfield laid the wood to Greensboro 70-0 and Fairfield beat up on Carver Birmingham 70-52. Gadsden City, Midfield, Ramsay, Thorsby and St. Michael all tied or set team records for scoring this week.

   *   Upsets? Rehobeth shocked Charles Henderson 30-27 as a 24 point underdog. Straughn 35-21 over Houston Academy. Lee Huntsville 49-42 over Ft. Payne.

   *   Big region games? West Morgan pulled away from Deshler 56-35. Thompson beat Hewitt-Trussville 40-14. Southside Gadsden surprised Leeds 23-13. Corner beat Northside 32-27.

   *   Close Games? Muscle Shoals squeaked by Hartselle 55-49 in double overtime. Auburn trailed most of the game but scored very late to defeat Opelika 31-30. Oxford held on to defeat Pell City 28-25. Beauregard came from 22 down to overtake Sylacauga and keep them winless 39-38.

   *   Statement wins? Bob Jones 29-25 Florence. Central Phenix City 48-14 Dothan. Spanish Fort 35-6 St. Paul's. Guntersville 20-6 Scottsboro. Handley 39-6 Anniston. T.R. Miller 31-17 Bayside Academy.

   *   Huffman was shutout by Pinson Valley 61-0 and have been outscored 382-0 this season. The last team to not score a point in a season was Notasulga in 1965 when they were outscored 329-0 in nine games. The Vikings host Clay-Chalkville this week.

   *   Gulf Shores (7-0) is off to the best start in their school's history as the Dolphins got by a tough Williamson team 45-13. Corner is 6-0 for the first time in school history after dropping Northside 32-17.

   *   B.B. Comer (7-0) is off to their best start since 1996. Locust Fork (7-0) is also enjoying their best start since 1998. Sulligent is 7-0 for the first time since the 1966 football season. Mary Montgomery is 7-0 for the first time since 1965. Pisgah and West Morgan are both 6-0 for their best start since 2003. Congratulations to these schools.

   *   Off to bad starts? D.A.R. and Macon-East have never began a season 0-7 until this year. Jasper is 0-6 for the first time since 1994 and Saks is also 0-7 for the first time since 2004. Hillcrest the #10 preseason team according to the ASWA polls is 0-6 for the first time since 1992.

   *   If we missed anything I will try to include it in our podcast tomorrow.

   *   Fyffe has been ranked by the ASWA for 159 consecutive weeks since the final poll in 2009.

   *   The longest winning streak belongs to Saraland who has won their last thirteen games following a 59-20 win over Blount. The Spartans are going to be difficult for any team in the state to defeat the next couple of years.

   *   Columbia now holds onto the longest losing streak at 78 straight contests. The Eagles lost to Decatur 42-0. They hold the all-time record for consecutive losses.

   *   Mars Hill with a string of 35 straight region victories tops this list as they defeated Colbert County 45-7. Catholic Montgomery (31) is close behind the Panthers.

   *   Barbour County has lost 63 consecutive region games after falling to Goshen by a score of 41-0.

   *   The #3 ranked Catholic Montgomery Knights have won 30 straight regular season games. They beat Montgomery Academy 48-0 this week for their fifth shutout of the season.

   *   Saraland has won 20 consecutive home games following their road win over Blount. This week the Spartans host Baldwin County.

   *   Catholic Montgomery also holds onto the longest road winning streak having won 21 consecutive road games after knocking off M.A. on the road. Their last four games have been on the road and they won them all by a combined score of 181-0.

   *   The early season loss to Geraldine has not slowed down Fyffe as they dominated Collinsville 53-6. The Red Devils have scored at least 49 points in every game since that first game loss. They are currently sitting on a string of 312 games without being shutout.

   *   Danny Horn picked up the 347th win of his hall-of-fame coaching career and is now alone in second place on the all-time list behind Terry Curtis with 352.

   *   Anniston can claim the 600th win in program history next week as the Bulldogs play host to Talladega. They have an open date this week.

   *   Pat Prestridge tied Ron Watters for the most wins at Randolph County with 147. His overall record in 22 seasons at Randolph County and Oakman is 164-87.

   *   Hugh Fountain, the head football coach at W.S. Neal, can accomplish something no other coach currently has done. He could become the winningest coach at three different schools. His Eagles defeated Cottage Hill 42-13 and he in one victory behind David Salter at W.S. Neal with 62 wins. He is also the winningest coach at Charles Henderson (106 wins) and Escambia Academy (94 wins). His overall record stands at 265-139 in 36 seasons as a head football coach.
