First Round of the Playoffs Tidbits & Records

The playoffs are getting serious now after the first round. Here are a few tidbits from this week's football action.

   *   Be sure to catch a special edition of our podcast this Sunday night as we will be posting a new episode with some guests this week. Chris and Kody will join the team to discuss the matchups this week. Also follow the Barber Shop Gurus on Wednesday morning for their latest game analysis and predictions. Last week the guys went 9-3 predicting the games.

   *   All the official playoff brackets are posted as the fun continues. Win and keep playing the next week.

   *   Monday we will unveil the latest AHSFHS Power Ratings for every team along with our predictions each playoff game. Scoring averages are posted now.

   *   The remaining undefeated teams:
       7A - Central Phenix City (10-0), Mary Montgomery (11-0)
       6A - Clay-Chalkville (10-0), Hillcrest (11-0), Muscle Shoals (10-0), Saraland (11-0)
       5A - Gulf Shores (11-0)
       4A - Catholic Montgomery (11-0), Jackson (10-0), West Morgan (11-0)
       3A - Lauderdale County (11-0), Madison Academy (11-0), Mobile Chr. (11-0)
       2A - B.B. Comer (11-0), Locust Fork (11-0), Reeltown (10-0)
       1A - Elba (11-0), Leroy (10-0), Loachapoka (10-0)
       AISA - Lowndes Academy (12-0)

   *  Class 7A region three swept region four for the fourth consecutive season and the fifth time in six years. Also 7A region two went 3-1 against region one.

   *  Six #4 seeds pulled off the upsets in the first round. That is about norm and the same number as last season. The #3 seeds also won 16-of-52 games this past week. That too is the same as last season. The record since 2000 for #1 seeds losing in the first round in any season is nine in 2013 and 2018.

   *   An even dozen teams put up 60 or more points on their opponents led by Elba running over and around University Charter School 70-8. One note here is that 46 teams set a school record this year so far for most points allowed in a season. That has to be a record even without looking it up.

   *   Upsets in the first round of the playoffs? As always there were upsets. The biggest upset according to the AHSFHS Power Ratings was UMS-Wright taking out north favorite Central Clay County 7-0 after entering the game as a 26 point underdog. Piedmont defeated J.B. Pennington after being a pregame 15 point underdog. Overall the Power Ratings predicted 88 of 101 games correctly this week for a winning percentage of 88.6%. Five of the losses were in games where the winner was an underdog by less than seven points and three games were considered even.

   *    Comeback wins? Brooks fell behind 21-7 before Oneonta 49-21 to defeat the Redskins 56-42. Mary Montgomery saved region one with a come from behind 21-13 win over Dothan. The Vikings fell behind 14-0 in the first half before rallying for their first playoff victory. T.R. Miller fell behind Anniston 16-0 at halftime before shutting down the Bulldogs to come away with a hard fought 20-16 victory.

   *   Close Games? UMS-Wright held off Central Clay County 7-0 in a defensive struggle. The Bulldogs only gained 69 yards in the game but it was enough to advance to the second round. It was the first shutout for the Volunteers since 2015 some 110 games ago. Theodore was also shutout by Hueytown 14-0 for the first time in 74 games.

   *   Statement wins? Muscle Shoals defeated Pinson Valley 42-7. Oxford beat Athens 45-27. Gulf Shores romped past Beauregard 48-7. Ramsay shutout West Point 50-0. Leeds turned back Arab 33-7. West Morgan also shutout Etowah 56-0.

   *  B.T. Washington, Corner, Headland, Helena, Mary Montgomery, Priceville and Thorsby have never won a second round playoff game among the teams still playing football this season.

   *   Teams who have not reached the second round in a while include; Houston Academy (2010), Boaz (2008), Corner (2006),  John Carroll (2004), Locust Fork (2001) and Mary Montgomery (Never).

   *   The best second round matchups I would most like to see; Vestavia Hills (9-2) at Thompson (9-1), Andalusia (10-1) at Jackson (10-0), Jacksonville (9-2) at Bibb County (10-1), West Morgan (11-0) at Corner (10-1), Highland Home (10-1) at B.B. Comer (11-0) and Geraldine (10-1) at Gordo (10-1).

   *   Teams who have never hosted a second round game include; Boaz, Mary Montgomery, Gulf Shores, Priceville, Tuscaloosa Academy.

   *   Best home team records in the second round of the playoffs for teams hosting games next week. Piedmont 10-1, Briarwood 10-3, Sweet Water 14-2, Leroy 10-3, Central Phenix City 9-3 and Thompson 7-2.

   *   Teams you do not wish to face in the second round along with their all-time record in the second round of the playoffs. Hoover 19-1, Maplesville 27-6, UMS-Wright 26-5, T.R. Miller 24-11, Deshler 31-8 and Brantley 35-7.

   *   Gulf Shores (11-0) is off to the best start in their school's history. Locust Fork advances to the second round with a school record 11-0 record.

   *   If we missed anything I will try to include it in our podcast tomorrow. We will cover all the playoff matchups for each classification.

   *   Fyffe has been ranked by the ASWA for 164 consecutive weeks since the final poll in 2009.

   *   The longest winning streak belongs to Saraland who has won their last seventeen games following a 54-14 beat down of McAdory in the first round of the playoffs.

   *   Saraland has won 22 consecutive home games and will be on the road next week in the second round against Briarwood.

   *   Catholic Montgomery also holds onto the longest road winning streak having won 22 consecutive road games.

   *   Fyffe continues to dominate Class 2A as they have for the last ten seasons. The Red Devils are currently sitting on a string of 317 games without being shutout.

   *   Doug Vickery Jr. won the 150th game of his 24 year career at Ariton, Coffeeville, Florala and Flomaton. His record is 150-115 since 1995. The Hurricanes knocked off Walter Wellborn 34-0 last week in the first round. Congratulations Coach.
