Week Ten Tidbits & Records

Most playoff spots are filled, region champions are crowned and the post season is one week away. Here are a few tidbits from this week's football action.

   *   Be sure to catch our podcast this Sunday night as we will be posting a new episode. We will go over all the playoff scenarios for each and every region in the AHSAA. Also follow the Barber Shop Gurus on Wednesday morning for their latest game analysis and predictions. Last week the guys went 7-5 predicting the games.

   *   Monday we will unveil the AHSFHS Power Ratings for every team along with our Top Ten in each classification. Scoring averages are posted now.

   *   In case you missed it Percy Julian defeated Smiths Station 35-10 on Saturday.

   *   Most regions are set but only Class 2A is totally resolved today. Lots of tie breaker scenarios to play out next week when all the playoff matchups will become official.

   *   Once again we begin each week with the offenses and high scoring games and we had a few this week. A dozen teams put up 60 or more points on their opponents led by North Jackson who blasted D.A.R. 85-14.

   *   Upsets? The biggest upset according to the AHSFHS Power Ratings was Madison County defeating St. John Paul II 36-35 after entering the game as a 12 point underdog. Overall the Power Ratings predicted 173 of 195 games correctly this week for a winning percentage of 88.7%. We have been over the 84% mark since week three this year. Not bad if you ask me.

   *   Big region games? Catholic Montgomery beat Andalusia 27-14 in the biggest game of the week. Moody got by Southside 34-21 to create a three way tie for the region crown. Benjamin Russell defeated Helena for a region championship by a score of 20-17. Reeltown got by Highland Home 21-14 in a battle of unbeatens.

   *    Fyffe handed Coach Paul Benefield his 300th win as the head coach of the Red Devils by defeating Ider 46-0 for their 5th shutout of the season. He is only the second coach to do this behind Buddy Anderson.

   *   Close Games? None was closer than the controversial 55-54 win for St. Michael over T.R. Miller. A bad call by the officials on a two-point conversion will be talked about across the state for a while. Mars Hill escaped Scottsboro 36-35 as they continue to defeat larger schools.

   *   Statement wins? Mobile Christian throttled undefeated Thomasville 45-14. Russellville beat Fairview 31-14. Leroy shutout Millry 26-0.

   *   Early in the season it looked like Piedmont, Hoover and UMS-Wright might all three miss the playoffs but it appears all will be playing in the post season in 2023. Plainview defeated a beat up Ohatchee squad 38-14 to hand Piedmont the third spot in region six. UMS-Wright can wrap up the 4th spot in region one if they defeat Williamson next week and the Bucs will represent region three in 7A as the number four team with a 4-6 record.

   *   Huffman was shutout by Parker 56-0 and have been outscored 578-0 this season. The last team to not score a point in a season was Notasulga in 1965 when they were outscored 329-0 in nine games. The Vikings lost every game by at least 40 points in 2023. It is the second worst season when considering point differential. In 2016 J.F. Shields was outscored 630-14 in ten losses.

   *   Gulf Shores (9-0) is off to the best start in their school's history as the Dolphins dropped Vigor 42-12 this week. Locust Fork completed the regular season 10-0 for the first time ever after beating West End 51-12.

   *   B.B. Comer (10-0) also finished the regular season without a loss for the first time since 1995. Mary Montgomery is 10-0 for the first time since 1965. Mobile Christian is 10-0 for the first time since 1995 when they were a member of the AISA. West Morgan is 9-0 for their best start since 2002. Lowndes Academy is 10-0 for the first time since 1968. Congratulations to these schools.

   *   Off to bad starts? D.A.R. and Huffman have never finished a season 0-10 until this year. Calera last started a season 0-9 in 1993.

   *   If we missed anything I will try to include it in our podcast tomorrow. We will go over all the playoff scenarios for each classification.

   *   Fyffe has been ranked by the ASWA for 162 consecutive weeks since the final poll in 2009.

   *   The longest winning streak belongs to Saraland who has won their last fifteen games following a big win over Theodore by a score of 42-13.

   *   Columbia now holds onto the longest losing streak at 81 straight contests. The Eagles lost to Lee Huntsville 52-12. They hold the all-time record for consecutive losses.

   *   Catholic Montgomery will top the list for with a 34 game region winning streak. They added one to this streak by defeating Andalusia 27-14.

   *   Barbour County has lost 65 consecutive region games after falling to Lanett by a score of 62-14.

   *   The #3 ranked Catholic Montgomery Knights have won 34 straight regular season games.

   *   Saraland has won 21 consecutive home games and will host a first round playoff games against McAdory in two weeks.

   *   Catholic Montgomery also holds onto the longest road winning streak having won 22 consecutive road games.

   *   Fyffe continues to dominate Class 2A as they have for the last ten seasons. The Red Devils have scored at least 46 points in every game since that first game loss. They are currently sitting on a string of 315 games without being shutout.

   *   Gordo, with an 8-1 record, has assured itself of the 31st consecutive winning season. The last time the Green Wave failed to win more games than they lost was in 1992 when they finished 4-6. The record belongs to Oneonta who had a run of 37 straight winning seasons between 1958-1994.

   *   Luverne has wrapped up their 41st consecutive playoff spot which is the record in Alabama. The last time the Tigers did not qualify for the playoffs was back in 1982.

   *   Millry was shutout by Leroy 26-0 in a battle for a region crown. It is the first time the Wildcats were held scoreless since 2018 some 66 games ago.

   *   Southern Choctaw chalked up the 500th win in program history as the Indians shutout Fruitdale 46-0 this week.

   *   Danny Horn won the 350th game of his hall of fame career as Central Clay County defeated Russell County 30-14. In his 35 year career his overall record stands at 350-96.

   *   Rod Hudson, the head football coach at Hackleburg, can tie John Hardin for the most victories at the school this week with a win over Cherokee. Coach Hudson has a record of 117-55 in 15 seasons leading the Panther's football program.

   *   Drew Gilmer surpassed Coach Jerry Wood as the winningest coach at Clay-Chalkville this week with the 62-7 victory over Shades Valley. Coach Gilmer has 76 wins at Clay-Chalkville in just seven seasons leading the Cougars.

   *   Mark Hudspeth accomplish the same feat at Gulf Shore as he moved past Duane Davis, the first coach for the Dolphins.

   *   Dustan Goode has 79 wins at Mortimer Jordan which ties him with Greg Watts for the most victories at the school. The Blue Devils will play at Fultondale this week.
