Preseason

The 2017 season begins this week with most schools opening the football season. Here are a few tidbits entering the season.

   *  The state's newest schools kick off their initial season this week. Jefferson Davis County and Ashland.

   *  Simmons enters the season riding a 25 game winning streak. Kemper County is second having won 15 consecutive contests. Calhoun City and Indianola Academy follow with streaks of 14 straight victories.

   *   Brookhaven Academy hopes to end a string of twenty-three consecutive losses this season. They are followed closely by St. Patrick's with a string of twenty-two. New Site would have the longest streak at 24 consecutive losses but will not field a team this season.

   *   Tishomingo County has lost 42 consecutive region games in a row but do not begin region play for a few weeks. Jim Hill follows with a string of 29 straight region losses.

   *   Simmons has also won 22 straight regular season games. Indianola Academy leads all MAIS schools with a streak of 28 straight regular season wins followed by Kemper Academy with a 27 consecutive regular season victories.

   *   Charleston has a streak of 48 consecutive region wins with no signs of slowing down this year. They open region play in seven weeks.

   *    Indianola Academy has won 32 consecutive home games. The Colonels open the season at home against Pillow Academy this Friday night. Calhoun City leads all MHSAA schools with a streak of 14.

   *   Simmons has won 17 consecutive road games. Jackson Prep has won the same number to represent the MAIS.

   *   Jackson Prep will try to extend their streak of 46 straight winning seasons. The only losing season in the school's history was in their initial season of 1970. They should have little trouble extending the streak in 2017.

   *   Wayne County hopes to avoid the dreaded shutout and extend their streak of consecutive games scoring. They are currently sitting on a string of 240 games without being shutout. The last time they failed to score was back in 1999.

   *   East Side had won ten consecutive season openers but will not field a team this year. The current streak belongs to four teams. Cathedral, Forest, Philadelphia and Tri-County Academy are all tied and have won eight straight season openers.

   *   Taylorsville will be working hard to extend their string of qualifying for the playoffs to 28 consecutive seasons.
