Davis was named All-State, Tuscaloosa Quarterback Clubs Back of the Week, Tuscaloosa Quarterback Clubs Back of the Year» All-County and All-District in basketball. He played varsity football four years, served two seasons as captain, and starred in baseball and basketball. He ran 125 times for 1,070 yards and an 8.8 yard average, completed 15 of 30 passes for 180 yards, scored 20 touchdowns and four extra points for 124 points, and posted a punting average of some 35 yards.

The first night game played between high school teams in the state occurred on September 23, 1927 when Pike Road and Cloverdale met in the Cramton Bowl in Montgomery.
