 High School Bio:

            Mercer played varsity football two years, captained the squad, was named Outstanding Senior Athlete and Best Athlete of the Year at Demopolis High, and rated All-America squad. Standout on pass receiving, quick openers, and open field running. Grid statistics: 18 touchdowns, six-yard per carry average, completed one of two passes for 22 yards. Rated All-Conference baseball team.




Great Moments in Alabama High School Football History

Luverne 'Toad' Wise was the first female football player in Alabama and may have been the first in the country. She was a kicker for the Escambia County Blue Devils in 1939-40.
