 High School Bio:

            Sawyer played four years of varsity football and was Captain of his squad. He was voted High School Most Athletic; All-State for Post-Herald; All-State Alternate for Birmingham News; All-County Team his Sophomore and Senior years; Played on 10-0 Team as a senior. He lettered in baseball and track for three years. He was 2nd in 100 Yard Dash in State Meet and 4th in the 220. He made 33 passes for 804 yards; Rushed 17 times for 165 yards; 9 kick-off returns for 269 yards, 11 punt returns for 269 yards, 13 touchdowns for 78 punts.

The first football game played by a high school team in Alabama was in 1892 when Central Birmingham (Phillips) lost to Alabama 56-0 on November 11.
