Giddens named Volunteers head coach

Former Lineville coach Steven Giddens was named the head football coach of the new Central High School of Clay County at the Clay County Board of Education meeting Thursday afternoon.
His hiring is the answer to one of the biggest questions of the offseason concerning the merger between former rival powerhouses Clay County and Lineville.
?Well, it?s been a long process,? said Giddens, who led the Aggies the past 13 seasons. ?We?re just glad it?s finally over with.?
Former Clay County coach Kris Herron, will work under Giddens as the Central-clay?s defensive coordinator. The two have been working sideby-side all offseason, running the program in the interim and completing tasks such as dragging the field, acquiring new uniforms and establishing a strength and conditioning program.
?Kris is a great coach,? Giddens said. ?And he?s done a great job at Clay County. I have 100 percent confidence in him. Going with him as the defensive coordinator was a no-brainer.?
Joby Burns, a former Lineville assistant, will head up the offense.
Central-clay began spring practices this week but won?t play a spring game, instead opting for a simple scrimmage to gauge their process.
?We?re just going to keep it within ourselves right now,? Giddens said. ?It?s a new experience and it?s been kind of difficult coordinating kids from two different schools to get together for practice in the afternoons.?
Giddens has won 74 percent of his games as a head coach with a career mark of 174-45.
