I was thinking this has probably been discussed in the past, probably in the old forum threads that got deleted. I was watching a local Birmingham show called Absolutely Alabama, and they were talking to Albertville city leaders. In the discussion they mentioned that the Albertville game with Guntersville this year will be the games' 100th edition. So that got me to thinking about two possible interesting topics I thought had been discussed before, and I looked around and couldn't find them. I'm sure some of these topics are more easily answered than others, but it's still interesting to think about.
First is what would be a list of the most played series between teams in the state.
Second would be what is the most wins a single team has over another team in the state.
Then another aspect of that could be what the widest margin of victories in a series one team leads over another.
Another interesting part of that would be what is the most wins a team has in a series, yet still trail in the series.
Albertville vs. Guntersville is one of the longest at 99 games along with Thomasville vs. Clarke County and Clarke County vs. Jackson. All those are at 99 games entering this season.
Others over 90 games are Foley vs. Robertsdale 94, Foley vs. Fairhope at 94 games, Cullman vs. Hartselle at 92 games, Geraldine and Crossville 91. Foley and Baldwin County at 91 games. Talladega vs. Sylacauga at 90 games.
Foley is involved in three over 90 games.
Albertville and Guntersville is the oldest. But the two rivalries that have played the most games against each other will never meet again on the football field. Clay County vs. Lineville, a total of 102 games between the two. Some in the playoffs.
And the winner is Etowah vs. Gadsden. They played a lot twice a year in the Charity Bowl and met a total of 104 times. 25 times in the Charity Bowl and three times in the playoffs.
Foley has beaten Robertsdale so many time they lead the next two questions. The Lions annually defeat the Golden Bears and hold a 72-15-6 advantage in the series.
I can answer the fourth question but not off the top of my head.
The reason I know the answer to these questions is because I am working on the next series of articles which will be the rivalries. Much of the research is complete. Just have to put it all together.
The answer to the last question is likely Albertville with 45 wins but still trails Guntersville 48-45-6 in the series. I think that is the most wins and still trailing.
Great questions Shane. Maybe I should have waited to see if anyone else knew the answers.
Too late now. Who knows. Maybe I missed something.
