Ohatchee assistant principal Christopher Hayes handed Nathan Wehunt a set of keys and told him to get to work at Thursday?s Calhoun County Board of Education Meeting.

It wasn?t a symbolic gesture.

Wehunt, the defensive coordinator at Cherokee County the past six seasons, was hired as the Indians? new head football coach. He?ll begin his new position immediately, working half days at in Centre before making his way to Calhoun County in the afternoons the remainder of the school year.

?It was a real set (of keys),? Wehunt said. ?We?ve talked this week. I told him I was coming down Thursday and we?re staying ?til we get it done.?

It?s Wehunt?s first head-coaching position, who wore his state championship ring, commemorating Cherokee County?s 15-0 run to the title in 2009 to the meeting.

West End brings back Hallmark as football coach
Thu. April 26, 2012 at 10:33 p.m. | By Times Staff

Randy Hallmark is headed back to West End.

Hallmark, who guided the Patriots football team for eight seasons in the 1990s, will take the helm of the program once again after the Etowah County Board of Education approved his hiring Thursday afternoon. He replaces Hayden Stockton, who led the squad for the past three seasons.

Hallmark coached in Walnut Grove from 1990 to 1997, compiling a 64-26 record and leading the Patriots to four area championships and six playoff appearances in eight seasons.

After leaving West End, Hallmark was the head coach for one year at Arab and three years at Albertville. He later went on to serve as an assistant coach at Etowah and Boaz. Last season, he served as an assistant on Gene Hill?s staff at Sardis.
