Alabama High School Football Head Coaches

Gerald Gann


Gerald Gann attended Winfield High School where he played football. Gann was named All-State by the Birmingham News as a 185 pound running back his senior season in 1960. He also played in the 1961 Alabama All-Star game in Tuscaloosa. Gann also graduated from the University of Alabama.

Coach Gann, over his impressive career as a head coach and athletic director, spent 34 years in the sports arena at Gordo High School, Berry High School, Homewood High School, and Hoover High School.

������During this period his 12 baseball teams at Berry High School won more than 250 games and a state title.

His 14 basketball teams, including five girls squads at Berry High School and nine at Homewood High School, also recorded more than 250 wins. During his 16 years at Homewood High School and Four at Hoover High School, Coach Gann compiled an enviable record of 130-97-2 in football. He also coached in the Alabama-Mississippi All-Star Classic.


Ganns teams at Homewood reached the State Championship games in 1986, 1990 and 1994. His teams won seven region championships over his 27 year career in high school. His playoff record was a very respectable 21-15 in 15 playoff appearances. His overall coaching record stands at 159-145-2.

His 1986 Patriots team at Homewood lost to Gadsden 13-7 in the title game. His 1990 team fell to Blount 36-24 and the 1994 squad was outscored by Greenville 28-14 is his other championship game appearances.

Coach Gann, who was inducted into the Marion County Sports Hall of Fame in 1995, further demonstrated dedication and professional ability as a member of the Alabama High School Athletic Association Central Board and Legislative Council, the inaugural state prep hall of fame committee, and as president of the athletic directors and coaches association; he also served as an assistant coach in Newnan, Georgia.

In 2005, Gann was inducted into the Alabama Baseball Coaches Hall of Fame, and in 2000 he was inducted into the Alabama High School Athletic Association (AHSAA) Hall of Fame. In 1995, he was inducted into the Marion County Sports Hall of Fame.

Gann became an assistant coach at Birmingham Southern following his high school career as the running backs coach.
