Coach Malcolm Laney had a huge task as the football season approached. His team was very young and only returned a single letterman from the previous state championship season.
The team ran through the season and outscored their opponents by a combined score of 211-13. The Colonels were led at halfback by captain Harry Gilmer. Gilmer, along with Arthur at end, Lawley at tackle, Leonard at guard and Langner at quarterback were selected to the All-City team.
The star of the season was the sensational Harry Gilmer. He earned All-State and All-Southern honors for his efforts on the field. He also won the coveted Quarterbacks Trophy which was awarded to the best football player in Jefferson County that season. His breath-taking jump passes became a trademark for him at Woodlawn that he would carry on to his playing career at the University of Alabama.
Playing before the largest crowd to ever view a high school football game to that time, the Colonels played their best game of the season in front of 27,000 fans in defeating rival Ensley on November 26th by a score of 19-0. Harry Gilmer got the first touchdown when he faded back almost 20 yards behind the line of scrimmage before leaping into the air and slinging a spiral to Gordon Pettus for the score. An almost identical play resulted in the second score before Langner scores the final touchdown on a short run to seal the win for Woodlawn.
Woodlawn was invited to play a team from Miami following the seasons to settle the Southern Prep Title, but the AHSAA declined to permit the game. The climax of the season was when the team was awarded the Charles A. Brown County championship Trophy for their efforts during the 1943 season. They were also voted as the 1943 State Champions by the local media.
