*-Class 6A in 2009

Today we will explore 5A football in Alabama and the 2010 season. West Point, East Limestone and Lawrence County join 5A after participating in 4A last season. None of them made the playoffs in 2009 so they will find it more difficult to compete in 2010. Russell County, Paul Bryant, Hueytown and Pinson Valley moved down from 6a and ironically none of these four were able to make the playoff teams last season either. Hueytown could be the most improved team of this bunch.

Region Four had six teams make the playoffs in 2009 and managed an overall record of 53-33 to lead all regions. Every team won at least five games last season. The weakest region appears to be Region Two with an overall record of 35-48 last year with none of the teams winning a playoff game.

Look for Russellville to again lead the way to Auburn in December. Demopolis returns Demarcus James and no doubt will be a force in the southern end of the state. Look for Spanish Fort, Greenville, Briarwood and Cullman to have deep playoff runs in 2010.

Late last night we threw all the teams in a cookie jar and let my granddaughter draw them out until we came up with this article. This is our projected order of finish for 5A.
