Top Ten Active Coaches

As we quickly approach the 2010 football season the talk will turn to Coach Waldon Tucker and his chase to become the all time wins leader as a head coach in Alabama. Other head coaches are making their mark on the football landscape around the state with some very impressive records.

There are eleven coaches with at least 200 wins who currently roam the sidelines on Friday nights. Three others have a good possibility of reaching the 200 win mark this season. They include Fred Yancey at Briarwood, Randy Ragsdale at Trinity and Glenn Vickery at Daphne. believes this to be the accurate records for theses coaches but if you have information about an error please let us know. We strive to be as accurate as possible but it is often very difficult to research some schools.

The Top Ten

Waldon Tucker  -   425 games  -  299-123-3. We are very confident that Coach Tucker's record is correct. Several Fayette County football fans helped us over the off-season in getting the record accurate. Coach Tucker is set to break the state record of 302 wins set by Glenn Daniel this season. He has two state championship to his credit with the first coming in 1980 at Gordo and in 1996 at Fayette County. He has been the head coach at Demopolis Academy, Gordo and Fayette County over the past 37 seasons.

Buddy Anderson -  382 games  -  269-112-1. Coach Anderson has spent his entire football head coaching career at Vestavia Hills in Birmingham. He became the head coach in 1978 and has won two state titles in 1980 and 1998. He will be entering his 33rd season in 2010.

Robby James -  358 games  -  264-93-1. Coach James has spent all but one season in the AISA and accumulated an impression eight state football championships at Catherine and Morgan Academies. He also coached teams that appeared in another eight championship games. He was very successful at Faith Academy before his most current stop at Marengo Academy. His teams won ten or more games fourteen times.

Jamie Riggs -  312 games  -  246-66-0. Coach Riggs has been the head coach at T.R. Miller since 1989 after spending three season at the helm of Opp. In twenty-one seasons at T.R. Miller every one of his football teams have made the playoffs with four state championships and another four championship game appearances. His playoff record is very impressive at 61-18. Only one of his teams won less than eight game sin a season.

Dale Pruitt -  328 games  - 228-100-0. Coach Pruitt has been the head coach at Pisgah, Plainview and Fort Payne. He is currently at Plainview which is his third stint with the program. His teams have played in two state title games at Plainview in 1990-91.

Danny Horn -  275 games  -  226-49. Coach Horn began his head coaching career at Clay County in 1989 and proceeded to win. Each of his twenty teams had a winning record and nineteen made the playoffs. His overall football playoff record is 53-13 with state titles in 1994, 1995, 1996, 2000, 2000 and 2005. His teams also appeared in two other title games. In 2009 Coach Horn moved to 6A Benjamin Russell.

Joe Nettles -  368 games  - 219-145-4. Coach Nettles has been the Head Coach at Catherine Academy, Patrician Academy, Morgan Academy, Marengo Academy, Boaz, Chilton County, Winfield, Alma Bryant, Monroe Academy, Washington County before taking over at Billingsley this season. He won football state titles in 1976 and 1980 at Patrician.

Shaun Bond -  285 games  - 209-76. Coach Bond began his head coaching career at Greensboro in 1980 and has been at Valley, Demopolis and Smiths Station before his current stint at Southern Academy. His teams won football state titles in 2004, 05, 06 and 07 at Southern. His playoff record is 31-15 in twenty four years as a head coach.

Terry Curtis -  204 games  - 204-62. Coach Curtis was successful at Shaw and Murphy in Mobile before taking over the reins at UMJS-Wright in 1999. In eleven seasons at UMS-Wright his teams have made the playoffs each season and have not lost in the first two rounds of the playoffs. He won football state titles in 2001, 2002, 2005 and 2008. His overall playoff record stands at 43-14.

Doug Goodwin -  279 games  - 200-79. Coach Goodwin has served as head coach at Marion County, Lineville, Demopolis and Russellville. He won a state championship at Demopolis in 2004 before becoming the head football coach at Russellville in 2007. His teams have appeared in another four state title games. His overall playoff record is 34-17 in twenty-three season.

Russell Jacoway -  308 games  - 200-107. Coach Jacoway has spend each of his twenty-seven seasons as a head football coach at Sand Rock. His 1985 team won the class 1A state championship while his 1997 team made it to the football championship game. Along the way his teams won an impressive twelve region championships.
