2016 Class 6A Coaching Changes

Region 1

Daphne 

Kenny King is a graduate of Daphne High School and the University of Alabama where he was a football star with both programs. He later played in the NFL for the Cardinals and the Ravens before retiring in 2008 due to injuries.

He has served as the defensive line coach the past three seasons at Hamilton High in Chandler, Arizonia.





Region 2

Sidney Lanier 

Marvin Cunningham takes over the football program at Lanier after Reggie Barlow changed his mind about the job and took off for Virginia State University.

Cunningham served the past three seasons as the defensive coordinator under Clayton Harris and was the interim coach at Lanier. this will be his first stint as a head football coach.



Dothan 

Kevin Jackson takes over the football program at Dothan, landing his first high school head coaching job. A graduate of Northview and Alabama, Jackson was an assistant coach at the school last season.



Stanhope Elmore 

Mike Dean returns to the coaching ranks in 2016 as the head coach at Stanhope Elmore. He has an overall record of 55-20 at Daleville, McGill-Toolen, Valley and Charles Henderson in six seasons.

His 2013 team at Charles Henderson reached the Super Six finals before falling to Oneonta 28-10.



Russell County 

Dwight Jones is returning to Russell County as the head football coach after being away from the school since 1994. He led the program from 1990-1994 with a record of 29-37 and the teams last playoff victory in 1998.

He most recently served as the head coach at Harris County GA the past two seasons and has been in Georgia since the 2004 season. He also was the head football coach at Auburn in 2001 with an 8-6 record.





Region 3

Valley 

Bradley Lowe is the new head football coach at Valley for the 2016 season. Lowe is a graduate of Tallassee and served as the defensive coordinator at Gadsden City in 2015.

Lowe served as assistant head coach and defensive coordinator at Northview from 2012-14 before moving on to Gadsden City last year. He coached safeties at Prattville for three years, coached defensive backs and receivers at Thompson from 2008-09 and was the coached defensive backs at Tallassee from 2001-07.





Region 4

Northridge 

Mike Vickery takes over the helm at Northridge after serving as the offensive coordinator at Daphne and as an assistant coach the past dozen years. He was also an assistant at Davidson under his father Glenn Vickery for three seasons.



Selma 

Keon Handley Sr. has been named as the new head football coach at Selma. Handley is a graduate of Fairfield in Birmingham and Miles College.





Region 5

John Carroll 

John Carroll High School principal announced the new head football coach. His name is Logan Colafrancesco. He was the offensive coordinator at Moody High School last year.

He has coached at John Carroll in 2006, Spain Park, Oxford, Oak Mountain, Pinson Valley and Enterprise. He is a graduate of John Carroll.





Region 6

Center Point 

Shawn Gregory steps up to take over the football program at Center Point High. He has previously served as the head football coach at Jackson-Olin in 2008 where his squad went 3-7 in his only stint as a head football coach. His contract was not renewed in 2009.

Gregory was the head coach at Georgiana for eight games in 2010 where he did not win a game before being relieved of his duties.

He is a graduate of Jackson State where he was a record breaking quarterback. He spent some time as an assistant coach at Tuskegee University and Mississippi Valley State.

He most recently was the head coach at New Hope High in Mississippi in 2013 where his only team went 4-7.





Region 7

Pell City 

Head football coach Keith Etheredge resigned his position at Leeds in February to accept the same position at Pell City. He led the Green Wave to four state championships in his ten seasons with the program including the last two.

Etheredge leaves behind a football program on top of Class 4A. His overall record at Leeds stands at 107-34 and his playoff record was 35-6 on the field. His teams won six region championships and never finished worse than third.

He arrives at a Pell City program that has won only 15 playoff games in the history of the school.





Region 8

Athens 

Cody Gross returns to Athens but this time as the head football coach. He served as the offensive coordinator at the school from 2003-2006.

Gross was the head coach at Colbert County from 2007-2009 with a record of 26-13 in three seasons. He also was at Wilson for one season in 2011.

He played quarterback at North Alabama (1993-95) and is a member of the Division II Hall of Fame. He served as an assistant at UNA (1998-2000) and Delta State (2001-2002) before arriving in Athens the first time.

Great Moments in Alabama High School Football History

Thomasville scored 54 points against Gulf Shores in the first quarter of a game in 2003. They managed to hang on for an 81-14 win.
