2011 Prep Spotlight Week 4

AHSAA Spotlight, Week 4

Marion County Passes 500 Yards In Offense For 3rd Straight Game

MONTGOMERY-- It took just 34 offensive plays for Marion County High School to roll up 541 yards in total offense last Friday as the Red Raiders grabbed the AHSAA Prep Football Spotlight in a wild 69-43 win over Hubbertville.
Coach Rusty Funk's team, which in 2010 became the first team in state history to score over 400 points and give up more than 400 points in the same season, rushed for 212 yards on 25 tries, had 329 yards on just nine pass completions and scored at least seven times on distances of 40 yards or more to remain unbeaten at 4-0  and 3-0 in Class 1A, Region 5.
It marked the Raiders' third straight game with 500 total yards or more after gaining 340 in the season opener versus Hackleburg.
Hubbertville (3-1), which dropped to 2-1 in region play, rolled up 299 yards for a combined team total of 840 yards for the game.
The standouts were plentiful, starting with Marion County place-kicker Ben Riggs going a perfect 9-of-9 on extra points. He has now kicked 34 straight extra points this season and 36-of-37 with one blocked (versus Hackleburg) on the year.
Junior quarterback Sean Wallace completed 9-of-11 passes for 329 yards with six TDs covering 65, 59, 50, 48, 43 and 41 yards. He had no interceptions. Wallace also rushed for 33 yards and returned a fumble 76 yards for another TD.
Receiver Ben Johnson had five pass receptions for 175 yards with three TDs. DeShawn Reibesehl had 2 receptions for 70 yards and also rushed for 114 yards on nine carries with TDs of 2 and 35 yards.
Hubbertville running back Aaron Dillard had 147 yards rushing and four touchdowns on 28 carries and completed 2-of-8 passes for another 23 yards for Coach Lamar Harris' Lions. Hunter O'Mary also ran for 116 yards on 23 attempts with a 48-yard TD run.
The offensive donnybrook produced the state's 12th highest scoring game on record with 122 points combined. It also beat out several other individual clutch performances turned in by Hueytown senior quarterback
Jameis Winston, East Limestone place-kicker Josh Appleby and Linden running back Marquis Shelton.
In a game televised live nationally on ESPNU Friday night,
Winston, who has committed to Florida State, dismantled host McAdory's strong defense as the Gophers won the battle of unbeatens 48-14. Winston was 13-of-17 passing for 208 yards and two TDs, rushed 22 times for 100 yards and two more scores and added a 26-yard touchdown reception on a trick play in the fourth quarter.

Appleby kicked a 31-yard field goal with 18 seconds left against Russellville to break a 28-28 tie, then moments later teammate Leon Jones scooped up a fumble and rambled 75 yards for another score as the Pirates shocked the Tigers 37-28.
   And
Shelton accounted for three touchdowns and 247 yards total offense as Linden beat defending Class 1A state champion Sweet Water 25-14 to snap a nine-game Bulldogs winning streak in the series. He scored the game-clinching touchdown on a 36-yard run as Bears coach Andro Williams, a former Sweet Water player and assistant coach, notched his first win over his alma mater.
