Alabama All-Star Game
1949
The 1949 game was a spectator's dream -- a real battle from beginning to end. The Northerners made it two wins in a row with a 7-6 victory. The Southerners scored early and held the lead until the last quarter when Clell Hopson of Tuscaloosa High broke away. The terrific tackling of Bobby Marlow for the South was one of the outstanding features of the game. This big fellow from Troy High School gave a real demonstration in backing up the line.
William H. Bancroft, Anniston, served as head coach of the smooth operating Northern All-Stars. His staff was composed of Hal Self, Athens; Fred Payne, Fayette; and Joe Gann, Jones Valley. The North employed the Notre Dame box formation.
The coaching staff of the Southern squad was headed by Rip Hewes, Dothan; and included Havis Dawson, Murphy; W. H. Brown, Valley; and Sam Jones, York. The South All-Stars used the Norman "T" to good advantage, being able to run wide or pitch out, and Marlow was ever dangerous through the middle.
