1948
The inaugural game, on August 27, 1948, was won by the North All-Stars, 33-0. They got off to a fast start and never stopped. Joe Brewer and Bobby Golden, both of Decatur, were outstanding in the winner's backfield, and Al Wilhite, a tackle from Tuscumbia, sparked the forewall. Brewer was a very effective and "T" quarterback.
The North All-Stars were coached by H. L. Ogle, Decatur, assisted by Ed Eubank, Ramsay; Walton Wright, Sheffield; and Travis Black, Sylacauga. The South All-Stars were coached by J. E. O'Brien, Tallassee, assisted by Russell Taylor, Enterprise; Comer Sims, Selma; and Wendell Hart, Evergreen.
Shorty Ogle used the "T" offense and it was very effective with wide plays and passes. Hot O'Brien employed the single wing balanced line with the shift. These men, their staffs, and the All-Star Football Committee did a fine in augural game job and worked out some of the kinks for future years.
