Coaches: Willie Martin, Benjamin Russell and Bob Newton, Homewood
Game: Friday December 7, 2001 Legion Field, Birmingham

Summary:
This was the fifth meeting between the two teams in the past three years. The short series was tied at two games apiece and each team wanted to win the rubber match. Homewood came up short by losing in a rematch of the previous year's title match by a score of 20-13.
Brandon Thornton ran 92 yards for a touchdown on the game's second play, but it wasn't enough as Benjamin Russell came back to win the Class 5A state championship. The loss snapped a 25 game winning streak by the Patriots and handed the title to Benjamin Russell.
The win gave Benjamin Russell their first state championship in school history.
