Captain Conrad Wesley "Bull" was one of the main reasons that 1936 Tuscaloosa Black Bears won the State Championship. He played a brand of football that inspired the entire team during the season. The Black Bears suffered their only loss of the season from Lee High School in Columbus, Mississippi by a score of 14-0. Lee High was considered on of the best programs in the south at the time, so the loss was not devastating to the Black Bears. The game that clinched the title for Tuscaloosa came against the powerful Sidney Lanier from Montgomery. On November 20th, the Black Bears defeated the Poets by a score of 12-6. Albert Tatum intercepted a pass in the second quarter and returned it to the ten yard line. Joe Echols scored a little later on a two yard run to give Tuscaloosa the lead at halftime. Davis scored in the second half on an 18 yard reception to clinch the win and the state championship. The last game of the season was against a strong team from St. Louis, Missouri at Denny stadium in Tuscaloosa. The Black Bears trounced the University team from the mid-west by a score of 19-0 on their home field. The Black Bears were led on offense by quarterback Blackstone Thompson. He was accurate with his passes and was a shifty runner that proved to be difficult to tackle. Hilmon Holley was in his fourth season as the head football coach of the Black Bears. He turned out winning seasons the past four years and won a state title while coaching the basketball team in 1935.
