1964 Linden Patriots

 1964    Linden Patriots
 Record: 10-0-0
 Head Coach: Walter Henders

The 1964 Linden Patriots were chosen Class 2A State Champions by the Montgomery Advertiser

The Linden Red Devils returned 24 lettermen from their 1963 team so there was little doubt that they would be tough to beat in the 1964 season. They also returned two all-state players and five All-Blackbelt players.

The 1964 season came down to a final Paper Bowl matchup of two giants in Gordo and Linden. The Red Devils walked away with an impressive 13-0 win and another state championship. Linden had won a title in 1962 after completing the season with a perfect 10-0 record.

Against Gordo the Red Devils held the Green Wave to minus two yards rushing and a total of only fifty-two yards in a stellar defensive effort. Some 7,500 fans saw Linden strike for its first touchdown in the first period on a 47 yard pass from Waldon Tucker to Tony Jacobs. They would add another score in the final period on a 52 yard run by Jacobs. Jacobs would finish the game with 52 yards rushing on only five carries and the touchdown pass. Bobby Barr had two interceptions off the arm of Gordo quarterback Larry Blakeney during the game.

The Red Devils outscored their opposition 329-26 in 1964 with the only close game coming against a very good Demopolis team in a 10-7 victory. Linden completed the season riding a thirty-four game unbeaten streak.

Junior quarterback, Waldon Tucker, led the attack by pacing the team in individual statistics, leading them in scoring and rushing. Tucker scored 11 touchdowns, 28 extra points and one field goal for 97 points. He rushed for over 1,100 yards while averaging 10.7 yards a carry.

Tony Jacobs scored 13 touchdowns while Bobby Barr added 6 of his own. Jacobs rushed for 606 yards with Barr adding 375 and Wayne Holley with 455.

The defensive leaders were Jack Thomas, Mike Pope, Wayne Holley and Bobby Barr. The defense collected 22 interceptions on the season.

The Red Devils were coached by Walter (Pete) Henders. He had spent one year as an assistant coach at Gordo and three years as an assistant coach at Live Oak FL before coming to Linden six years earlier. He was a native of Aliceville where he played football, baseball and basketball for the Yellow Jackets. Upon graduation he played football and baseball at Livingston State College. Under his guidance the Red Devils won the Blackbelt conference crown in 1959, 1962, 1963 and 1964.
