Linden returned only six lettermen from the 1958 season after losing seven
starters from the previous season. The Red Devils would finish the 1958 season
with a record of 8-1-1 which was good enough to be named as the District 2 state
champions by the Birmingham News.
The only blemishes on their record were a 13-6 loss to powerhouse Sumter County
(9-0-1) and a 0-0 tie with Marengo County (8-1-1). Sumter County would win the
class 1A title as awarded by the Birmingham Post-Herald.
On September 19 the Red Devils dedicated their new stadium by defeating
Coffeeville 27-0. In the game, Don Jackson rushed for 139 yards and three
touchdowns. In the first quarter he caught a 50 yard pass from Henry Roberts and
followed that score with a second period 45 yard reception and a 39 yard run in
the third. Kenneth Turner capped off the scoring with a 24 yard run in the final
stanza for the Red Devils.
The Red Devils were coached by Walter Henders in 1959. He had come to Linden
prior to the 1958 season and immediately turned the Red Devils into winner by
going 7-2-1 in his initial season as the head coach. During his ten season
tenure at Linden he compiled a record of 79-17-4 with perfect seasons in 1962
