1958 was considered a rebuilding year for the Pickens County team in 1958. All
they did was finish in a three way tie with Gordo and Aliceville for the county
championship and more importantly the Tornados were chosen as state champions by
the Birmingham Post-Herald.
Jerry Elmore was selected as the "Back of the Week" by the Tuscaloosa News for
his efforts in a 31-7 win over Palmetto. He ran for two touchdowns of 32 and 18
yards in the victory for the Tornados. Co-captains for the 1958 season were
Glendon Skelton and Bobby Howard.
Pickens County was coached by J.T. Elmore who was in his fourth and last season
as the head coach for the Tornados. During his short tenure Pickens County would
compile a 33-5-1 record. He was assisted by Boyd Batchelor.
The Tornados only loss came against a very good Gordo team by a 7-0 score.. They
handed Lamar County their only loss of the season on November 7th. On November
26th they defeated Holt in the annual Turkey Bowl by a 10-7 score. The win was
good enough to impress the poll voters for Class A in Birmingham.
