 2022 Preview

Piedmont completed the 2021 season with a 13-2 record. With their 6-1 region record and a third place finish in Class 3A region five, the Bulldogs earned a spot in the playoffs in 2021. The Bulldogs reeled off five straight playoff wins to claim the Class 3A State Championship by defeating Montgomery Academy at the Alabama Super Seven 35-33 in Birmingham.

The 622 points scored by the Bulldogs last year were a team record in a single season.

The high-scoring Piedmont offense ranked 15th in the AHSAA. They averaged 41.5 points a game.

Over the past two seasons the Bulldogs have gone 25-4 and will be looking to continue that winning tradition. As one of the best football programs in the state since 2010, Piedmont has gone a combined 146-21. Their 87.4% winning percentage ranks 1st in Class 3A over the past twelve seasons.

Over the past 25 seasons, Piedmont has gone a combined 215-95. Their 69.0% winning percentage ranks 5th in Class 3A and 38th in the AHSAA. Their last losing season was 2004.

The Bulldogs are led by head coach Steve Smith who is entering his seventeenth season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 186-33 over the past sixteen seasons at Piedmont. Under his direction the Bulldogs have qualified for the playoffs a total of sixteen times. They have won nine region crowns with Coach Smith. Coach Smith has won five state championships at Piedmont, the last coming in 2021.

Coach Smith's overall record as a head football coach in twenty-seven season stands at 271-78 (77.7%). His 271 wins rank 5th among active coaches in the AHSAA. Over the course of his career, Coach Smith's teams have qualified for the playoffs a total of twenty-six times and won fifteen region championships. He has a 58-21 record in the playoffs during his career. The playoff victories rank with the best among active coaches.

The Piedmont Bulldogs will play in Class 3A region six during the 2022 season. Following realignment, the Bulldogs remain in 3A but move from region five over to region six.

While most teams rebuild during the off season, Piedmont has been a consistent winner the past few years and will simply reload this season. The Bulldogs enter the season with expectations of not only a region title but reaching the state championship game. They are considered one the favorites in region six and could very well be representing the North in the Class 3A title game. The Bulldogs have succeeded in reaching the playoffs every year since 2005 and this year should be no exception.

The Bulldogs open the 2022 season on the road against non-region opponent Cherokee County on Friday, August 26 at Warriors Stadium/Johnson Field. Last year the Cherokee County Warriors finished with an overall record of 7-4 and in third place in Class 4A region four. The Warriors lost in the second round of the Class 4A playoffs to Vigor by a score of 34-0.

Piedmont and Cherokee County have met a total of 80 times on the football field. The Bulldogs have a 38-39-3 record against the Warriors. They last met in 2021 with Piedmont winning by a score of 27-0.

Piedmont returns 3A All-State Senior quarterback Jack Hayes. He was named to the first team last season.
