 2022 Preview

Clay-Chalkville completed the 2021 season with a 15-0 record. Last year Clay-Chalkville captured the region six title and a number one seed in the Class 6A playoffs. They finished region play with a 6-0 record. It was the first region championship for the Cougars since the 2015 season. The Cougars reeled off five straight playoff wins to claim the Class 6A State Championship by defeating Hueytown at the Alabama Super Seven 46-42 in Birmingham.

No team at Clay-Chalkville ever won more games in a season than the fifteen victories last year. The last time they won as many was back in 2014.

The high-scoring Clay-Chalkville offense ranked 2nd in the AHSAA. They averaged 48.5 points a game.

Over the past two seasons the Cougars have gone 26-2 and will be looking to continue that winning tradition. As one of the best football programs in the state since 2010, Clay-Chalkville has gone a combined 126-33. Their 79.2% winning percentage ranks 5th in Class 6A over the past twelve seasons.

Over the past 25 seasons, Clay-Chalkville has gone a combined 228-82. Their 74.0% winning percentage ranks 4th in Class 6A and 23rd in the AHSAA. The Cougars have been successful on the football field with twenty-two winning seasons during this time.

The Cougars are led by head coach Drew Gilmer who is entering his sixth season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 59-10 over the past five seasons at Clay-Chalkville. Under his direction the Cougars have qualified for the playoffs a total of five times. They have won one region crown with Coach Gilmer. Coach Gilmer led to a state championship in 2021.

Coach Gilmer's overall record as a head football coach in five season stands at 59-10 (85.5%).

With a ton of talent returning it is difficult to pick against the Cougars in 2022. The defense is loaded again with D1 talent for Coach Gilmer.

The Clay-Chalkville Cougars will play in Class 6A region six during the 2022 season. The Cougars have one of the toughest schedules in Class 6A. Their opponents had a combined record of 68-41 last season. That ranks 6th in Class 6A and 20th in the AHSAA.

The Cougars enter the 2022 season riding a 15 game winning streak. They have also won 12 consecutive regular season games. Clay-Chalkville has won 6 consecutive region games. They have won 13 straight games on their home turf at Cougar Stadium.

The Cougars enter the season with expectations of not only a region title but reaching the state championship game. They are considered one the favorites in region six and could very well be representing the North in the Class 6A title game. The Cougars have succeeded in reaching the playoffs every year since 2011 and this year should be no exception.

The Cougars open the 2022 season at home against non-region opponent Briarwood on Friday, August 19 at Cougar Stadium. Last year the Briarwood Lions finished with an overall record of 10-2 and in second place in Class 6A region five. The Lions lost in the second round of the Class 6A playoffs to Clay-Chalkville by a score of 56-21.

Clay-Chalkville returns 6A All-State Junior linebacker DJ Barber. He was named to the first team last season. The Cougars also return Junior athlete Jaylen Mbakwe. He was named to the first team.
