 2018 Preview 


       Wenonah completed the 2017 season with a 10-2 record. With their 6-1 region record and a second place finish in Class 5A region five, the Dragons earned a spot in the playoffs in 2017. Wenonah lost in the quarter-finals of the playoffs last season to a good St. Clair County team by a score of 27-26.

       The defense was very stingy last season as Wenonah ranked 25th in the AHSAA. The defense allowed only 12.5 points a game.

       Over the past two seasons the Dragons have gone 21-5 and will be looking to continue that winning tradition. Since 2010, Wenonah has gone a combined 58-29. Their 67.0% winning percentage ranks 11th in Class 5A over the past eight seasons.

       Over the past 25 seasons, Wenonah has managed to compile a record of 150-97. Their 61.0% winning percentage ranks 15th in Class 5A and 80th in the AHSAA.




       The Dragons are led by head coach Ronald Cheatham who is entering his thirtieth season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 169-131 over the past twenty-nine seasons at Wenonah. Under his direction the Dragons have qualified for the playoffs a total of eighteen times. They have won four region crowns with Coach Cheatham.

       Coach Cheatham's overall record as a head football coach in twenty-nine season stands at 169-131 (56.3%). His 169 wins rank 18th among active coaches in the AHSAA.

       The Wenonah Dragons will play in Class 5A region four during the 2018 season. Following realignment, the Dragons remain in 5A but move from region five over to region four.

       The Dragons enter the 2018 season riding a 6 game regular season winning streak.

       The Dragons should be considered one of the favorites for the region four championship this season and a home game in the first round of the playoffs.

       The Dragons open the 2018 season on the road against region opponent Woodlawn on Thursday, September 6 at Lawson Field. Last year the Woodlawn Colonels finished with an overall record of 1-9 and in eighth place in Class 5A region five. The Colonels closed out the regular season with a loss to Parker by a score of 76-0.

       Wenonah and Woodlawn have met a total of 25 times on the football field. The Dragons have a 14-11-0 record against the Colonels. They last met in 2017 with Wenonah winning by a score of 38-12.

Foley outscored their opponents 433-6 in 1961. The Lions were named state champions by the Alabama Sports Writers Association that season.
