 2018 Preview 


       Hoover completed the 2017 season with a 11-3 record. With their 6-1 region record and a second place finish in Class 7A region three, the Buccaneers earned a spot in the playoffs in 2017. The Buccaneers reeled off four straight playoff wins to claim the Class 7A State Championship by defeating McGill-Toolen at the Alabama Super Seven 48-20 in Auburn.

       Over the past two seasons the Buccaneers have gone 23-5 and will be looking to continue that winning tradition. As one of the best football programs in the state since 2010, Hoover has gone a combined 102-13. Their 89.0% winning percentage ranks 1st in Class 7A over the past eight seasons.

       Over the past 25 seasons, Hoover has gone a combined 265-58. Their 82.0% winning percentage ranks 1st in Class 7A and 1st in the AHSAA. The Buccaneers have been successful on the football field with twenty-one winning seasons during this time. Their last losing season was 1998.




       The Buccaneers are led by head coach Josh Niblett who is entering his eleventh season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 129-16 over the past ten seasons at Hoover. Under his direction the Buccaneers have qualified for the playoffs a total of ten times. They have won six region crowns with Coach Niblett. Coach Niblett has won six state championships at Hoover, the last coming in 2017.

       Coach Niblett's overall record as a head football coach in eighteen season stands at 194-48 (80.2%). His 194 wins rank 13th among active coaches in the AHSAA. Over the course of his career, Coach Niblett's teams have qualified for the playoffs a total of seventeen times and won seven region championships. He has a 52-10 record in the playoffs during his career. The playoff victories rank with the best among active coaches. Coach Niblett won a state championship at in 2004.

       Coach Niblett needs six wins this season to reach the coveted 200 win milestone.

       The Hoover Buccaneers will play in Class 7A region three during the 2018 season. The Buccaneers have one of the toughest schedules in Class 7A. Their opponents had a combined record of 81-32 last season. That ranks 1st in Class 7A and 1st in the AHSAA.

       Region three will be one of the most competitive regions in any classification this season. While most teams rebuild during the off season, Hoover has been a consistent winner the past few years and will simply reload this season. The Buccaneers enter the season with expectations of not only a region title but reaching the state championship game. They are considered one the favorites in region three and should be a team in the thick of the hunt to represent the North in the Class 7A title game. The Buccaneers have succeeded in reaching the playoffs every year since 1999 and this year should be no exception.

      

       The Buccaneers open the 2018 season at home against non-region opponent Pinson Valley on Saturday, August 25 at Regions Park. Last year the Pinson Valley Indians finished with an overall record of 15-0 and in first place in Class 6A region six. The Indians won the Class 6A State Championship last season when they defeated Wetumpka by a score of 31-10 in the Super Seven finals in Auburn.

       This will be the second meeting between Hoover and Pinson Valley on the football field. The Buccaneers have a 1-0-0 record against the Indians. They last met in with

       Hoover returns 7A All-State  athlete George Pickens. He was named to the first team last season. The Buccaneers also return  running back Larry McCammon. He was named to the first team.

       College prospects include: George Pickens (6-4, 190) receiver, Larry McCammon (5-10, 190) running back, Nick Curtis (6-5, 205) running back, Will Reichard (6-1, 185) kicker,
