 2018 Preview 


       Tanner finished the 2017 season with a disappointing 3-8 record. With their 2-4 region record and a fourth place finish in Class 2A region seven, the Rattlers earned a spot in the playoffs in 2017. Tanner's season came to an end in the first round of the playoffs when they fell to Lanett by a score of 41-8.

       Tanner took a step backwards last year with their first losing season since 2001. The Rattlers lost as many games as in any season since 1999. The defense allowed a team record 394 points last season. The Rattlers hope to rebound after a down year. Last season they struggled winning just three games which followed a 9-4 record in 2016.

       Tanner was inconsistent offensively last year and they need some improvement if the Rattlers want to be competitive. They only averaged 14.4 points a game.

       Tanner struggled on the defensive side of the football last year. The defense found little success in stopping opposing offenses as they gave up an average of 35.8 points a game.

       As one of the best football programs in the state since 2010, Tanner has gone a combined 85-19. Their 82.0% winning percentage ranks 2nd in Class 2A over the past eight seasons.

       Over the past 25 seasons, Tanner has gone a combined 209-81. Their 72.0% winning percentage ranks 3rd in Class 2A and 24th in the AHSAA.




       The Rattlers will be under the direction of new head football coach Oscar Bonds as they enter the 2018 season.

       The Tanner Rattlers will play in Class 2A region seven during the 2018 season.

       While most teams rebuild during the off season, Tanner has been a consistent winner the past few years and will simply reload this season. It will be an uphill battle for the Rattlers if they hope to grab one of the four playoff slots in region seven this season.

       The Rattlers open the 2018 season on the road against non-region opponent West Limestone on Thursday, August 23 at James Kennemer Stadium. Last year the West Limestone Wildcats finished with an overall record of 4-7 and in fourth place in Class 4A region eight. The Wildcats lost in the first round of the Class 4A playoffs to Fayette County by a score of 21-12.

       Tanner and West Limestone have met a total of 61 times on the football field. The Rattlers have a 33-26-2 record against the Wildcats. They last met in 2017 with Tanner winning by a score of 32-20.
