Satsuma completed the 2017 season with a 4-6 record. Last year Satsuma just missed making the playoffs with a fifth place finish in Class 4A region one with a 2-4 region record. The Gators have never won a playoff game in the school's history. They would like to break through and pick up that first post season victory in 2018. Since 2010, Satsuma has gone a combined 28-53. Their 35.0% winning percentage ranks 47th in Class 5A over the past eight seasons. Over the past 25 seasons, Satsuma has not won much with a record of 64-178. Their 26.0% winning percentage ranks 59th in Class 5A and 363rd in the AHSAA. The Gators have struggled on the football field with only three winning seasons during this time. The Gators will be under the direction of new head football coach Ray Nelson as they enter the 2018 season. The Satsuma Gators will play in Class 5A region one during the 2018 season. The Gators move up in classification to Class 5A. They may find the going slightly tougher with the move. With a little luck and some improvement, the Gators could find themselves challenging for one of the playoff spots for region one this season. Satsuma came up short of the playoffs last year but are optimistic of a return to the post season this year. The Gators open the 2018 season at home against non-region opponent Gulf Shores on Friday, August 24 at Copeland Field. Last year the Gulf Shores Dolphins finished with an overall record of 3-7 and in seventh place in Class 6A region one. The Dolphins ended last season on a positive note with a win over Robertsdale by a score of 45-19 after failing to gain a playoff spot. Satsuma and Gulf Shores have met a total of 6 times on the football field. The Gators have a 2-4-0 record against the Dolphins. They last met in 2013 with Gulf Shores winning by a score of 34-20.
